If so, what model....likes/dislikes? Any key features I should look for?
archerjg
I have a Garmin 755T and love it. The traffic feature can be a real time saver if you don't want to sit in backed up traffic. Mom and Dad bought a Garmin 1450T and have been very happy with theirs as well. I know several people that have Tom Toms and are just as happy. Really both are good units. Shaun_300
Just bought a Garmin Nuvi 50 last weekend, it's great! Wanted to get one a bit more fancy but they didn't have any in stock, plus this one was on for $119 instead of $169.
Strut10
Have a Garmin 1350. It's been very good. Just looking, today to get another. Probably going to get a 50 or a 2555. MAKE SURE whatever you get comes with free lifetime map upgrades !!!! Garmin's upgrade fee is generally between 50% - 75% the cost of just buying a new unit. WHISKEYSWAMP
I've had a tom tom for a few years and it does a decent job. I still prefer to print out maps on long trips because it doesn't always pick out the best route. I also use my droid charge gps and it seems to be more accurate than the tom tom. wtnhunt
Got a garmin 1350 here, think Don's advice on the upgrades is real good advice. Ours does ok, but it misses some roads, funny thing it has missed the same roads since I bought it. I upgraded it shortly after I bought it making me think even with a new upgrade it might still miss them. Too bad the one we have won't let you edit the maps, may be some out there now that do. RangerClay
Recently you were looking for a new phone. Most smart phones have some type of a GPS. My wife just clips her phone to the dash. Maybe you can kill two birds with one stone
redkneck
Getting lost is one of the trip's little pleasures Ruth. (I whip out the phone also)
Leo
We have a Tom Tom and a Garmin. My Garmin has a Marine mode and works as my boat GPS and Depthfinder as well as my truck GPS (It's neat unit). For ease of use, the Tom Tom wins. Super simple to operate. The Garmin is more versatile but also more complicated. Two pieces of advice. 1) If the GPS comes with a Disk and USB cable. Start the Disk install BEFORE you hook up your GPS to the computer. Otherwise Windows picks USB drivers on it's own that may not work exactly right and your unit may not update properly. It's best to update the unit first before you ever try to use it. Doesn't matter if the unit is on or off wait until the installation software tells you to hook up. 2) Do not leave the GPS where it can be seen in the vehicle when parked, EVER! GPS units are popular smash and grab items. I know two people this has happened to, in broad daylight! The thieves just broke a window, grabbed the unit and took off! Dawg
I have a Garmin Nuvi 250. It is a decent unit. Now I use the Microsoft Sync in my truck if I need directions or use my Droid Razr if I'm not in my truck.
