Strut10
What is this stuff ?? Run across it every year in gobbler season. Looks like domestic sweet potato leaves. But it's a single or double stalked plant growing no more than 12" high.
Ravin R10 man
almost looks like Ginseng in first and third photo..second looks like a young oak could not find a pic of it either Don pic of mayapple looked close..but dont think it is that either Edited June 3, 2012 by Mathews XT Man
Strut10
Nope. Definitely not ginseng. This is ginseng. And there's no woody stem or spent acorn on the root like oak seedlings would have. I can't find this stuff on any website or in any wildflower guide. I'm guessing it does not flower.
Tominator
Can't see pics at work. I'll try and remember to look at it when I get home.
wtnhunt
Dunno Don, about the only plant I can id there is the maple in the second pic to the right of the plant you are asking about. I did not see any oak seedlings either.
RangerClay
It's tough identifying a plant without its flower or flower color. I'm going to guess passion flower.
Tominator
Based on context clues... Ivy Leaved Morning Glory?
Strut10
I don't even know if this thing flowers or not. It does not appear to be making any sort of bud. The stem definitely rules out the passion flower. It also does not vine at all. I would think that rules out morning glory. I don't know. It's a real puzzler. Tominator
Think I got it this time....Might be Sassafras seedlings. Smash the leaves, or better yet, smash the roots. If it's aromatic, smells a little like root beer, it's sassafras.

Whatever it is, it's an herbaceous perennial. Not woody at all.
redkneck
Smoke it and give us a report and we could rule out a few. No clue Don, don't see anything quite like it here, maybe your county agent can help.
Strut10
I was thinking about finding a contact person in the biology dept. at the local university. Hadn't thought about the county agent.

Strut10
Been talking back & forth with a plant ecology prof. at the local university. I think she hit it. Viola triloba or Three-lobed violet. PLANTS Profile for Viola triloba (three-lobe violet) | USDA PLANTS
RangerClay
Now I know I didn't find it in my wildflower book, it's not in there. I'm getting new one. I knew it had to flower, just a matter of being there at the right time. Neat discovery, glad you found your answer.
