horst
Re: NY Age Limit?!?!? [ QUOTE ] "On the other hand Ive seen 16 yr olds I wouldnt trust with a watergun"..Thanks Horst! [/ QUOTE ] Your welcome Seriously, around here most of the property damage and vandalism that goes along with firearms, you know what i mean, shooting street signs, blowing windows outta buildings, cars or farm machinery, and even a lotta the animals that get shot and left to rot, poached just for fun, things like that, the majority of this stupidity can be attributed to kids from about 15 to 18 yrs old.Ive lost hunting spots because of these guys before.think its got a lot to do with the fact thier old enough to drive, and are just getting to the point where they can hunt on thier own.A lotta them have parents who introduced them to guns but thats about as far as the lesson ever went, they know how to shoot but have no idea how to do it responsibly. [ QUOTE ] I am against allowing "all" children to hunt big game when ever "they" want to! Children never should make the rules when it comes to firearms. JMO!! [/ QUOTE ] I think we pretty much agree on that point as well, I just dont think the state should have to mandate when that age is.I dont think all children should hunt big game.I dont think any child under 16 should hunt big game without supervison from an adult.I mighta come off that way but Im not gonna drop my kid off in a deerstand and leave him by himself.Theres to many things that can go wrong with that scenario. I kinda forgot about this earlier but Iowa has a season set aside for youth hunters.its early in the year before the rest of the seasons open. Its available for kids 12-16 yrs old who have taken and passed thier hunters safety course.IMO its a good deal.It gives you a chance to take your kid out without all the other hunters being in the field. If you take em em every year it gives you 4 years to introduce your kid to big game hunting without all the pressure that goes along with a regular deer season. Its a good chance to teach em about deer movement, scent control, following up on a blood trail, and all the other things theyre gonna need to know and spend some time with them.Since its just for them you can really concentrate on just getting them a deer and having fun doing it without worrying about someone else screwing up your hunt or getting your own tag filled.Id really like to see more states adopt something like this where the focus is on the kids, the fields are all thiers for a week, and the deer are unpressured. Its a great chance for them to learn and some really good memores to be made
Guest Squirrelbuster
Re: NY Age Limit?!?!? Hey, Horst, I think NY was thinking about making a youth deer hunting season, but they haven't did it yet.
SaskMan
Re: NY Age Limit?!?!? I won't go into detail on my opinions on what is "the right age". Here you must be 12 before you can hun and you must hunt with supervision until you're 16. I agree with this law for here. I agree entirely with much of what ADKhunter has said about parenting. As far as 16 being too late to stir interest, I say B.S... I never hunted until I was 16 and I'm as obsessed as anybody. If you want your child to be interested in the outdoors, don't blame age legislation...throw away the PS2, the computer games, get rid of the Xbox, and get your child outdoors, enjoying what naturehas to offer.
