derbybull
Anybody got any advice for a first time hunter? Like guns, gear and so on.
stevebeilgard
welcome to the forums. i hope you enjoy it here. tough questions to answer as we don't know if you're hunting rabbits, quail, deer, or what. archery or rifle. to start hunting, you really need a friend or partner, even if you have to advertise for one at the local sporting goods store. start off with a hunter safety course, where you'll meet several like minded folks. hunting takes a lot of knowledge and skill to do correctly, but is well worth the effort. redkneck
Welcome to the forums! A good buddy and mentor can mean the world to a guy starting out. Most of us have our dads to thank for being there and involving us with the sport and take for granted those that did not. Good folks in here with good advice, stick around! Slash
Welcome to the forums! Where are you from? Is there Gander Mountain near you? Or a Bass Pro Shops? You'll need a shotgun for those turkeys, when are you taking the hunter safety course?
bowhunter97
For the whitetails i'd say you cant get better than a remington 30-06 or 270. The 30-06 is highly versatile in the size of load but with the 270 its flat shooting and doesnt have bad recoil. The 30-06 for deer the best shooting round for it suposedly is a 180grn bullet. Most shoot 150's though. Also the 270 most people shoot 130's.Personally i have a 30-06 and i love it but do your reaserch go hold a few and see what you like. MoHuntress
My best advice, would be to get acquainted with a seasoned outdoorsman or outdoorswoman and let them show you the ropes. I would also suggest that you spend a lot of time, shooting your weapon of choice, prior to heading to the woods for the real deal. Taking the hunters safety certification in your state would also be beneficial. When I started hunting 30 years ago, no one showed me the ropes. What I learned, I learned on my own. Looking back on all of that now, it would have been real nice if there would have been someone to show me the ropes.
Dawg
Welcome to the forums. I can't help you much on turkey hunting as I don't hunt turkey but Steve B. said it best. Good luck on your adventures!
Rhino
1st...welcome to the forums. Next...Not sure what state you'll be hunting but I'd get very acquainted with the game laws there. There may or may not be a fall turkey season in your state. You need to know all about the game laws in your state anyway. I also agree with Steve B. Find a friend or partner to show you the ropes. There's a whole lot to learn when it comes to hunting any game. Some are easier to hunt than others. Deer & turkey are some of the hardest we have to hunt here. Other than that, start with some basic how to books on any species you choose to hunt. There may be some helpful articles avaiable on line too...maybe even on your state's DNR web site. derbybull
Thanks guys this is a big help to me. I'm from Pennsylvania. A coalminers granddaughter I love anything that deals with the outdoors fishing, camping, hiking and so on. I always wanted to go hunting. But unfortunately my dad has bad legs and is on blood thinner so I didn't want to put him at risk. And the other guys that said I could tag along with them left me waiting ( nice right). Any how I have a Bass Pro, Cabela's and Gander Mountain close to me.

wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Some real good advice given already, not really much I could add other than that a lot of trial and error when learning on your own and don't be afraid to ask questions.
