wehuntsc
We have recently got a young 6pt calico on trail cam. For the past 4 years we have done the qdma program. Should we take this calico out before the rut so it doesn't reproduce or are they ok?
wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Have read and heard that color variations(piebalds, albino's, and the rare melanistic deer that are all black) do not equate to inferior genetics in regards to antler growth, but I am not a biologist. Never seen any myself nor gotten any pics of any. Since does also contribute to the genetics that are passed on, taking the young buck may not stop you from seeing deer later on with the same genetic trait and if you have older age class bucks around he may not get the opportunity to breed any does anyway. Personally, if I was on a large enough piece of property and knew the deer had a pretty good chance to make it, I would probably let it walk since it is a young deer. Could make a real cool trophy in a couple years.
pointing_dogs_rule
calico implies three different colors. Post photos so that we can see the deer. good luck to all the dog
MoHuntress
I must say, that I have never heard of a "calico" deer. I have seen albinos, piebolds, and even melanistics, but never anything with three colors. I, too, would be very interested in seeing a pic. Tominator
I've seen 1 or 2 piebalds in my day, never in a hunting situation though. I have seen 1 melanistic (all black) in my day too. I've never seen an albino. Agree with William, I don't think they pose any problem genetically, personally, I'd probably let it walk in hopes of it getting bigger.
