Jeramie
McAlester is a HIGHLY sought after hunt in Oklahoma's Drawn hunts. Its an Army Ammo Depot. Its protected against all hunting short of a very short drawn in season that is stick and string only. Nothing can be attached to a bow. There are many P&Y deer killed on those hunts every year. If you kill a doe or a wild hog you get to come back the following year! I drew out a couple of years ago but didnt get to go, family stuff. I was sick. However, results posted this morning and im in! Any other Okies do any good on the drawn hunts? Here is the site with the harvest from 2011 and the ten most wanted bucks on the base. dbHunterNY
i see a lot of Black Window recurves in the pictures from last year. so if you shoot a buck only it's a long time to draw again? if you shoot a buck and a doe you're automatically invited back the following year? Jeramie
If you shoot a doe or a wild hog you get an automatic invite back the following year. Because its a drawn hunt it doesnt matter if you connect or not. Oklahoma went to the point system on hunts. People who just start putting in take several years to draw out on this kind of a hunt. There are the big three in Okieland. Elk (bull or cow), Antelop (Doe or Buck), and McAlester. Besides that we have several other choices anyone can draw into too like spring turkey hunts, deer in typically closed sections, etc. Many of those are rifle/ shotgun/ bow hunts. Its a fairly large selection and cost $5 a year to put in as many hunt selections as you want. At the end of the entry stage a computer randomly picks based off of the point system. The lesser wanted hunts (like Deer in Spavinaw) are typically easier to draw into. The harder hunts require more tenure (in terms of points) to draw into so it takes time to build up those points. Rhino
Target rich trophy environment there! Good luck and I sure wish you luck having a close encounter with one of those top 10 bucks...especially Phantom 14. Better get to work practicing with the stick & string! ckrich
That is awesome man! I've wanted to put in for Mac but I don't have the time to dedicate to traditional archery right now. No luck for me this year, I haven't drawn out in 15 years. I wish there was a way to check your preference points. Just out of curiosity. dbHunterNY
well then it sounds like a doe is more prized than any other deer there. definitely awesome potential there for massive bucks. like Al said that Phantom 14 buck would be a heck of a trophy even for that place. well good luck! abrown
Grads, I'm jealous! I didn't draw out for a single hunt! I believe it's around 40,000 acres, heavily managed for trophy deer. They have a hit list, usually all are over the 150 in up to 190. I haven't looked at it in a while, but their BIG deer. They just started to encourage the hunters to shoot doe a couple years back by allowing them to come back the following year if they harvested a doe. Again, congrads, keep us informed! Jeramie
Gearing up! Im looking for camping gear to be sure im getting plenty of rest and comfort. It will be 2 1/2 days in the stand, literally. Im also going to start shooting the recurve today when I get home. I want to be good with it again. I really want to see how I can shoot out to 30 yards. Im pretty well set at 20 but want to push the limits so I dont have to say "What if?"! Ill keep the progress coming as it develops. ksdeerhunter03
Didn't get drawn in, I have put in for five years, and yet a guy I work with gets drawn EVERY year! I called wildlife dept and they said its not a "true preference point" system. I dont know what they call it,but I call it bush league. ckrich
All I can say is get a twin sized air matress.
Jeramie
All I can say is get a twin sized air matress. I have one of those. Im thinking about picking up a Coleman padded cot. They are something like $50 and I would use it every year at deer camp. No inflation required.
huntinsonovagun
Nothing for me this year. What weekend did you draw? Seems everyone I know that has gone has seen monsters every time they've been there. Quick question on the draw application- did they change it this year? I thought before you could only put in for 5 hunts TOTAL. Seems like I was able to put in 5 deer, 3 elk, a couple antelope, and turkey this year. Either I've not been putting in on everything in previous years or they changed it this year!
ckrich
As best as I can remember, they haven't changed it. I known that for the past few years I've been putting in for 5 deer hunts and 3 elk. I haven't ever applied for the goats or chickens, so I wouldn't know if they have changed.
