public land strategies

good advice already given. otherwise start to figure out what the other hunters do. learn where funnels and pinch points are and hunt them on the weekend if you're hunting then. get in early and out late. if other hunters or hikers walk on through then sit tight. your hunt isn't by any means blown. deer will tend to act like they're yarding up on public land. one day you'll see a ton and the next you might not see any. if the sign is there and it looks like a good spot don't give up on it when you get skunked the first sit and don't see anything. most of the biggest deer i've seen have been on public land.

Wear orange.

Hunt weekdays and avoid weekends.

Get as far away from roads & trails as you can get.

This pretty much sums it up.

I hunt public land a few times during bow season and then wait until about 3/4's of the way into gun season before I go back. By then most of the hunters have either tired out or tagged and moved on. It's harder to see deer beings they are spooked from all the pressure but it gives me a chance to hunt a lot of ground without running into anyone else.

I look for creative ways to get away from the parking areas. In one area I use a boat to access the hunting ground furthest from the road. I have a short walk and when others park and start walking in the deer head in my direction.

My latest strategy is to mark areas with my GPS on my computer at home. Avoid roads and I look for hillside flats. The GPS takes me to the areas.
