Mobil 1 Oil

I saw this in another forum and thought I would see what kind of feedback it might get here:

"I was going to transfer over to the synthetic side after 66K and saw that MOBIL 1 offers 5K, 7.5K, & 10K oils. What's that all about? Who in their right mind would use any oil that would potentially void your engine warranty by going over the manufacturers recommended oil change intervals of 3K (heavy use) or 6K (regular use)?"

Let me know what you think.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

This question has been discussed before Harv, and if my memory serves me correctly, synthetic oil is an ok option to use from day one, but not a good option when your vehicle has a lot of miles on it. It's not worth the cost of the sythetic.

My new truck and my wife's van have the oil sensor on them. It tells you how much oil life you have left. My truck is averaging 7 to 9,000 miles between oil changes.

I wonder how accurate those sensors are. confused.gif

Chris, you might be a little careful with those sensors! Where I have my vehicles serviced is also the place I bought them and they said not to trust the sensors and change oil and filter every 3 thousand miles. That is what I do.

I use Quaker State, 4X4 synthetic! Never had any problem with it or any of the vehicles I have used it in!

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

Synthetics are great! I have used Mobil 1 in my last three vehicles and have not had an engine problem. My Chevy Silverado i put 150 some thousand miles on it and the engine was never opened up. I used Mobil 1 from its first oil change at 3,000 and got oil changes every 10K miles after that. I was traveling 40 miles to work each way. The motor was still very strong, got decent milage, and did not smoke when I traded it in.

In my hemi I also use Mobil 1 and change it every 7,500 - 10,000 miles. I have 40K miles and it is still just fine.

Look at Amsoil . They say change it 25K or every year, which ever comes first. They will warranty any engine repair that was caused by lack of lubrication.

How do those sensors work Orlan?

Maybe I should play a happy medium and change when it gets to about 30% confused.gif

They are reset when the oil is changed. Not very accurate! It is based on miles driven. No idle time or anything else. If you drive in a lot of traffic, they are way off as to when you should change the oil! Stop and go traffic they are not accurate either.

Go by the mileage and you won't have any problem. Very cheap insurance for the engine especially in colder winters! Change both oil and filter every 3,000 miles!

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

Regardless of whether my oil life indicator says I need it or not I change my oil at 3,000 to 4,000 miles. I use Castrol GTX in my truck and my parent's have used the same oil in all of their vehicles with no problems. Dad's truck has 236,400 miles and it still burns no oil and gets good mileage and has used the same oil since the first oil change. Never used any of the synthetics before if it was new I might consider a synthetic like Mobil 1, but I would still change the oil at 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

Seeing as how the 3,000 mile oil change was started a long time ago it is outdated. There is way better oil, filters, and engine components than back then. I say 7,500-10,000 is fine now on newer vehicles.

It is best to use regular oil for the break in period on an engine and then switch to synthetic. After that is best to just stay with one kind.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

Several years ago, Consumer Reports did a check of taxis with all different brands of oil. After 60,000 miles, there was no noticeable difference in engine wear.

Personally, I change around 4,000 miles with regular oil.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

synthetic is the way to go. being a college automotive student, TRUST ME, its WAY better than regular, conventional oil. the synthetic oil does not come out of the ground like regular oil, it is produced in labs. the best thing about synthetic oils, is that it sticks and stays in your oil passages in the main bearings when you turn the engine off. with conventional oil, the oil drains out of the oil passeges. therefore when you start your engine, there is a split second when the main bearings and crankshaft journals are not getting lubricated or cooled. this can reduce engine life, and cause damage over time. synthetic is the best way to go to prolong engine life.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

I must say you DO NOT need to change your oil that often. The reason that they suggest 3-5K is to make sure there is no leaks.

I know I will get backlash but European's change their oil about every 15,000 miles. The cost to change the oil is very very high there ( like $120 ). They are running diesels too were running temps are usually hugher.

THis being said I change mine between 6-7,500

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

every 3,000 miles no matter what. I use regular oil. You can change your own oil or have it done so cheap anymore why not do it. Will your oil last longer than this, sure it will. You can run like some have said 8-10,000 miles per oil change. But why,it is a fairly cheap maintenance job,you also get to check it out to see if you have any other problems, leaks, brakes etc..Top off all the other fluids. Our shop does lots of engine/transmission oil changes. We break even on oil changes. Don't make any money on them. We do get alot of work from these oil changes,we check the vehicle over very well. Get tons of brake jobs because of this. People like to know if there is something wrong & fix it before it turns into a big problem. My opinion the most overlooked thing is the fuel filter. People never change them. I change them every 4th oil change on my regular customers.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

I am now at a little over 205,000, for those that are counting, and I either change or get it change every 3 - 4 thousand miles with Castrol and Fram filter. It doesn't burn any more oil now than it did 3 years, 11 months and 16 days ago when it was new.

15 bucks a month for oil & filter is pretty cheap insurance. IMO

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

I change mine at about 5,000 miles. Havoline oil and a Fram Filter. I have a 2002 S-10 with 72,000 miles, still going strong!!!

With the name brand oils these days, and the better technology we have, it is possible to go 7,500 miles between oil changes.

Re: Mobil 1 Oil

I'm an ex-mechanic of 17 years.Change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles Synthetic every 5,000.I've seen the difference on the inside. Most all brand name oils are good if you change them. The Lucas Oil products are great also. Icouldn't sleep at night if I drove 7000 miles and had'nt changed my oil.
