How much do you pay for auto insurance for your teen driver?

Christina has a 4.0 and is in honors classes, farm bureau told me they cannot give a break for grades? Shopping insurance companies now. Our insurance more than doubled when we added her. When she driving by herself she is only allowed to drive my old 98 truck(could not imagine much safer vehicle than the old 3/4 ton truck), premium is around $100 a month with all the discounts we get, seems way too high to me.

i pay 400 every 6 months with statefarm and im 19

That's real low...could it be your's is just for liability coverage?

William...thankfully we're beyond that now (my son's 25) but if I recall correctly, initially my son's insurance coverage (full coverage) was ~$2000/year of additional cost when he started driving. I think girls are cheaper than boys. It went up a lot after his 1st accident. He was driving my old Yukon, which was the closest thing I could think of to a tank to drive at the time. I forgot exactly how much it was after his 2nd accident but I think it was close to $400/month after that...maybe more though.

Supposed to be, agent told me to be thankful, it would have been double for a boy. With farm bureau if we went to pip and liability only on the truck then we would have to sign a waiver saying Christina would never drive any other vehicle that we own, even with us in it.

That is almost 5 grand a year for insurance Al.:jaw: That is insane.

Through high school I was payin 150 a month for only liability(sp?) and my bro right now is 16 and dad is paying around 140 for him. Once I turned 18 it went down some and now I'm 21 and still paying 100 for the bare min. It's a rip any way you look at it.

I know people who say they don't pay anything near what I pay but I've looked around an on or off my dads insurance it's the same or twice as much. I don't understand.

Back when I was 18 I bought a 2003 Cavalier 2 door 5 speed, I was quoted $9500/year for insurance, that was with no speeding tickets, clean record! Dad put it in his name with me as an occasional driver and it was still $270/month. Now I'm 25 and have my truck, just bare bones insurance is $130/month and that was with a DUI conviction in Jan 2009.

auto insurance on teens?

Kids should be listed under the parents policy. A stand alone policy for a youthful driver is outrageous. Your personal insurance is driven by two factors: claims and credit score. A stand alone policy for a teen will penalize them to the fullest bc of no or poor credit scores.

Also I would not sign a letter stating a child will only drive one car. This could really be damaging at the time of a claim and potentially void coverage.

Please also carry a least 300,000 liability limits and look into a personal umbrella policy. The standard 100,000 limits are very inadequate even though probably 75% carry that or less.

You should also get a copy of your child's motor vehicle report from the DMV. It's amazing how many things show put that you have no idea about.

Packaging all your insurance with one carrier will give you the most discounts.

Hopefully this helps.

With a $100 a month insurance premium you are getting a pretty good deal. Just think, God forbid, that if Christina ran into a small to mid-size car with that tank she is driving how many thousands of dollars in damage it would cause, and that is without medical costs figured in. That is how the insurance companies think. One accident can cost more money than a decade worth of premiums. The only way I am aware of that can reduce insurance costs is to assume a higher deductible with minimum liability limits, but, those two options are only a good idea if one can afford them in the event of an accident. William, my advise is that unless driving is an absolute necessity, then no driving until they have a job and can afford their own insurance. Teaches them responsibility. Also, congratulations to her for an outstanding gpa.

Yep, carrying suggested limits and she will remain on our policy so long as she keeps a clean record. With the same company for farm/home and auto gets us a few discounts on both.

Allstate was about the same as where we are. So far have gotten one quote at $500 a year less than where we are now on the auto with identical coverages, but they want us to change our farm policy over as well in order to get that rate. That company has the premium for Christina at around $800 a year, about where I thought it should be. Our farm premium is already paid up for this quarter so cannot change that right now, may just be stuck for this quarter on auto. Have not gotten a rate from them yet on the farm, but if it is the same or less will probably look at swapping when our next farm bill is due.

Agree totally with what you said here Dave, she tried to get a summer job, unfortunately there are just not a lot of jobs around. Her driving right now is only for school related extracurriculars(band, beta club, and etc). More convenient for us for her to drive herself on days where she has to stay after school, will save us some trips(school is about 13 miles one way).

William...

I have 4 vehicles. 1500 04 Ram, 95 K1500 Silverado, 06 Corolla and a 07 Trailblazer.

Full coverage on the corolla and blazer. With Allstate 25 years, no accidents, no tickets...$3255 per 6 months.

Only my son Joe(20) is listed on the policy so far. I am ready to add my son AJ(18) on the policy and get rid of the silverado for AJ's honda accord. Will do that next week. I'll let you know of the increase or decrease. But for me...I live in a populated area with lots of drivers. So I can see how my premiuims would be high. My son Joe kicks up $50/week for his Ram trucks insurance. Girls are usually treated as lesser risks.

Your gonna love this everyone...

I take the plates off and retire my 95 silverado last sunday. Left it at country house...Son AJ goes to MV to transfer registration on Tuesday to the pristine 2000 one owner Honda Accord. He saved all last year to buy. All went well... Exactly 118 miles and two days later...POW! He gets slammed by a woman who blew a stop sign. The whole nose is wrecked. Lexus 570 vs a Honda Accord. Lexus wins. No injuries to either party.

So it is not a question of " if " they'll get in a accident...the question is when.

Can't wait to see what my rates will go up to now. Just by being there you get assesed a percentage of blame. Just glad they are OK. Oh...BTW...my youngest son Michael was in the car with him also.

Adam

The other party blew a stop sign and hit him. Percentage of blame is just a clever way for ins companies to get out of paying money. You do not have to accept their findings. IMO If they want to assign blame 99% should be their fault. If you are not satisfied do not feel obligated to give in.

Adam, sorry to hear that.

William, State Farm is all I know about. They had a student discount, antitheft, and multi-line discount (I have my house insured through them and get a discount). I paid 1200 a year for liability in the late 80's and paid it myself -still had several wrecks.

My daughter is 11 and 16 will be here before you know it. I was thinking about a big vehicle for a first car, but was wondering if a mid-size with good handling, airbags, and high safety rating would be a better choice. I know it's a pain parking my F-150 in the city and getting around tight spaces. Not sure if bigger is safer in urban areas? Might lead to more fender benders which will jack rates up too.

depends on the value of the vehicle being driven also.

Yep. Older vehicles typcially have a lower replacement value and insurance would not be out as much if we had an "at fault" total loss.

Sorry to hear that Anthony, sounds like since she blew through the stop sign that she would be at fault and her insurance should settle on the claim without any question. Would be all over her insurance company if it were me and would not call my own unless I absolutely had to.

Dunno Frank, see your point about the city. Christina learned to drive around the farm here driving a full size ext cab truck, feel alot safer with her in it, dunno what the rate would be for her in a car.

Ironic, in a way, but my son got in a little fender bender on the way home from visiting his brother in the hospital the other day. He got cited for an illegal lane change. He's fine, but he broke our mirror and the lady's mirror. I called my agent this morning and told him I want to drop Joe, he's just too much of a liability and he'll be in college in a couple weeks with no need for a car. I was afraid my rates were going to get jacked, especially since we will be adding Katie in the next couple weeks.

I'm hoping he wasn't giving me agent double talk, but he said my rates won't go up from the accident claim because of accident forgiveness on our policy, and Katie will only cost us an extra $10 a month. Also found out the good student discount is worth $600/year on Joe. Not sure on Katie.
