kcall
I have a mineral block out and its a trophy rock but the deer aren't using it? Any reasons??
wtnhunt
Could be a number of reasons, first that comes to mind would be placement. Deer have to find the minerals to know they are there, establishing a site off a trail or near a field edge where there is good travel will help the deer find them. Another would be whether or not there is someone nearby giving minerals or whether or not your soil is rich in minerals which might make for deer not looking to seek minerals like they do in places where there are deficiencies. Where ever you have your minerals keep in mind you want to have water available nearby too.
Rhino
I agree with William. Water availability is important. Also...how long has it been out there? Sometimes it just takes time for them to start hitting them too.
kcall
mineral lick sights It's between two deer trails about 20 yards apart and about 100 yards from an acre size pond! I recently poured some salt in the grain form and they have pawed at it and tore it up!!
ds_woody
Pour some apple flavored Buck Jam over it. I did that to mine and you wouldn't believe the pics I started getting on my camera.
swohiodave
Put it where the trails cross? They may never find it between trails. I always buy a 50lb red mineral block from tractor supply. Last a while and the deer love it. They dont use it once it gets cold out.
kcall
mineral lick sights Alright I'll try some of that! Around what month will they stop licking them?
wtnhunt
Alright I'll try some of that! Around what month will they stop licking them? Depends. Deer here will continue to use minerals year round, but activity drops off in the winter.
ApexPredator
mineral lick sights I use the red mineral block or bagged mineral too. In 4 months they have dig about 8" into the ground to get the trace that melted. Pour it on the ground and rake it into the dirt. Helps in the heat since the salts can help the deer to retain water. Plus the minerals are food for doe milk for fawns in early spring.
