Zizzer59
A few years ago we lost our family farm and ever since we've lived in town. I can't find a place to hunt and I've even put adds on Craigslist. The past few years I would do some work for an old man but he recently passed and now I don't have a place. What are some tips to find a new place? What do you say to a landowner if you are going door to door? Any help is greatly appreciated . dbHunterNY
well you used to have a family farm so i'm sure you've got some farming skills to help out in some way. offer that when talking with land owners. also door to door is the way to go. ask well before the season gets there. don't show up in camo and expect to hunt now and work later. if the general word around town is a certain landowner doesn't let anyone hunt his property, then don't bother so much with that landowner. however, try ask the their neighbors, even if it's not a huge track of land. it's good to have options. dbHunterNY
...another thing. if they're on the fence about letting you hunt deer, then ask to hunt just predators or varmints. then after you've got your foot in the door and earned their trust work into shooting more popular game like elk, deer, or turkey. Ultradog
Around here you can buy a plat book that shows all the plats of land and the owners for all the townships in the county. I think is costs about $35 for each county. You can look in those and find pieces of state land. For example, not far from my land there is a small piece of state owned land that is right on the lake. The DNR bought it many years ago and were going to put in a public access to the lake but never did. It is very small - about 3 acres but the deer cross the road there from about a 300 acre parcel and go to the lake to drink. I know a guy who hunts that spot every year and he's always done well come hunting season. I think most people don't even know it is state owned. fly
How do you find hunting land? Try new things and make new friends and always ask around. For example - go to church and join a men's club. If you get a place, do not be complacent. Always look as if you do not have anywhere to go. Chances are that you'll only have the spot to hunt for a short time. Also, if anyone asks, there are No deer where you hunt

dbHunterNY
Thanks guys. I'm gonna try to get out this weekend try some door to door and maybe scout out some public land. I halfway don't trust public land even tho that's where I turkey hunt a tip for hunting public land. knock on doors neighboring public land away from trail heads to simply park your car. you can go in farther to more remote areas where people aren't willing to hike that far from a trail head are designated parking area. if you can get in and out clean without spooking many deer at all then you'll be covered up.
