RangerClay
Some of you may remember me posting my dad's 1968 35# Bear Bearcat. The olympics have me fired up and I want to finally start using it. What arrows would be best for this type of bow? Do I use the arrows from my compound? I was sold 3 arrows when I had a string made for it but they are really heavy nasty looking aluminum arrows. Can I use carbon arrows or do I need to shoot aluminum? I could use as much help as possible.
Rhino
Sure you can use carbon arrows. I shoot 400's with my 54# recurve. You can probably shoot either 400's or 500's. Not the easiest job determining what length to shoot. To figure out how to get the right spine I stripped the fletchings off an arrow & cut it down a little at a time till I got the right length for them to hit the target straight without fletchings. The correct length using 400's with my bow turned out to be 29 1/4" with a 28" draw. I think my buddy ended up with 29 1/2'" 400's with his 59# draw recurve also at 28" shooting 145 gr. broadheads. dbHunterNY
joe, you should look at a .500 spine carbon shaft and throw on a 125gr point for 35lbs. still at 35 lbs or even heavier recurves like Al's you'll want a heavier arrow. use a 4-5" feathered fletches with wraps to give you more weight in the back to balance out all the point weight up front. here's some that are alright. they look like wood but are carbon. i've shot them and know many that do. otherwise use a regular black or camo carbon hunting shaft. dbHunterNY
by the way, you think you've got the itch now. wait until you start shooting it. it's ridiculously fun and addicting. chasing squirrels and chipmunks with a recurve and your kids would be a blast. you may never hit one but it's still fun. i shot a whole techno hunt league and was hooked. now if just get my own stuff to shoot, instead of borrowing friends' stuff i'll be good. lol
JimPic
Unless your draw length is over 28", a .600 deflection will work...carbon or aluminum. Carbon Express 90's or GT 1535's are both good shafts. For aluminum's, a 1916. Beautiful bow, BTW
