hunting lost a friend yesterday

A guy none of you probably ever heard of died yesterday. His name was Earl and he was 81 yrs old.He was the most knowledgable guy around here when it came to archery gear and he pretty much single handedly kept the archery businues competetive around here.Hes also the man who sold me my first bow, set it up for me, and got me started shooting it.

I bought a piece of crap old roundwheel bow at an auction, it was shot and wasnt really even usable anymore.I wanted to bowhunt, dad and my uncle had started doing it 2 yrs before that and I couldnt afford a bow to try it myself.I took my round wheel bow that didnt work right into Earl one day and asked if I could trade it off.He looked at it and me and told me it was more or less useless. He msta seen how dissapointed I was because he took me up to the garage where he kept all the used bows and started looking through the racks. He found a used bow in there with a 300$ price tag on it.I drew it back and it felt right, but looked at the tag and told him I couldnt afford it.He looked at the old round wheel bow Id brought in, and looked at me again holding that bow and told me hed give me 150$ for the old bow if Id pay 100$ cash for the one I was holding and we would call it even.He was that way with everyone, he always gave you more on trade then what your old bow was worth, one time he gave Dad more on his used bow in trade in than he had paid him for it new the year before.

He made all the arrows himself that he sold and they were always right, the fletchings never peeled off and he kept records on everyone so he only had to look you up, even if you were only in there once every couple years. He started talking about selling out his businuess 5 or 6 yrs ago but couldnt let it go, he really loved archery and hunting in general. He will be missed by most every bowhunter in the area.

R.I.P. Earl

Re: hunting lost a friend yesterday

horst, It is always sad to hear of someone so dedicated to tradition and lifestyle passing on. I pray for him and his family and all of those whose lives he has touched by that dedication.

People like Earl are few and far between in this day and age. We are losing ground and the personal customer service and the friendships gained from men like him to the big box stores whose greed is taking over the small shops in serious numbers here in the east. You'd be amazed at the lack of knowledge found at the chains where most are under paid and only there because it is all they can find for a job.

We have lost a friend to hunting indeed. frown.gif

Re: hunting lost a friend yesterday

Sorry also bro. I dive as well as hunt. We live near a lake and the owner of our local dive shop is over 80 years old. I absolutely hate it. I know it will not be too many more years before he passes on. He is so much of a people person and seems to be a lot like the gentleman you were associated with. I just know there are so few that can replace the good old ones we are used to dealing with. Hope all turns out well in your neck of the woods. Greg
