Strut10
Finally finished the last of my plots Thursday night. Me, the Mrs. and the little boy had spent the day in Pittsburgh at a Dr's appointment. We had a good rainstorm moving in. Dad went and disked up the last three plowed acres where I was going to put my brassica/turnip/kale mix. He called me on my way home and said I oughta get it seeded before the rain. So I got home (with 2 hours before I had to be at a meeting) and seeded 3 acres with a hand spinner in about 40 minutes. We got 3/4"-1' of rain that night. So the seed should be off to a good start. I just hope I got it in with enough time left for it to put on enough growth before first frost. Probably have 7 weeks.

dbHunterNY
sounds like you burned some boot leather with that hand broadcaster. lol good luck with it, sounds like you got it out at the right time though. as long as we get some more rain and sunny hot days here in the northeast it should do just fine. assume the pH wasn't bad. fertilizing it at all? sskybnd
sounds like your right on time, 7 weeks till your first frost, i could only hope it would cool off here than. were still in the 100's to the high 90's with very little rain. that and im still working on my last plot area, been working most of the summer cutting the trash trees out, carring them out, and just now got it to where its ready to put the lime down. Strut10
Might even have 8 weeks til frost. Never can tell here. pH should be good to go. We spread a tri-axle load of lime on 7 acres this season. Have 500# of 15-15-15 to hit the newly-seeded plot with. Gonna wait until it comes up a little bit before I fertilize. Sure wish the rain hadn't all missed us today.

Steelhead
We spread lime as well this year to help the soil a bit. It will be interesting to see the differences in growth between this season and last. We're gettin' there.
Strut10
Well............. we got a little rain yesterday. Checked the plot this morning. 8 days after seeding and there's a good amount of little stuff up. Seems there must be a difference in germination rates. The PTT and kale seems to be farther ahead than the Barnopoli. Probably fertilize next weekend if all goes well.

wtnhunt
Good luck with it Don, maybe get some pics to post for us with the next update. Moisture has been a real problem here this year. Glad I have not planted my fall plantings yet.
Strut10
Bit of an update.............. Hit the forage plot with 500 # of 15-15-15 two weeks ago, right before a good rain. The field was basically seeded in thirds with Barnopoli rape, PTT and kale. The Barnopoli, for all purpose did nothing. VERY little even came up. The PTT and kale is like a freakin' carpet !!!!!!!! Don't understand why the Barnopoli farted and the other two boomed. But I guess, chalk it up to a learning experience and know what NOT to buy next year. dogdoc
Learn from experience. I'm afrain mine are going to be a bust. got mine in 2 weeks ago with good chances of rain--unfortunately didn't get the rain i needed. Just enough to get germination and nothing else. Afraid the seedlings are going to die from dehydration.
Strut10
Interested to go have a look at mine tomorrow to see how the fertilizer is working (or not). Didn't get a chance to take pics last weekend. Supposed to be raining tomorrow. Maybe get pics.......maybe not.
Strut10
Got a look at my brassica/turnip/kale plot today. Progressing VERY nicely !!!!!!!! Also mowed the foxtail off my 3 acre clover plot that sits next to the turnips, etc. The foxtail had about taken over. But there's a good jag of clover underneath. I think if I hit the clover with some fertilizer next spring and bomb the foxtail with some herbicide, it ought to really start to boom. Still no pics. Too darned busy and moving too fast today.
