Just tell us what works!

I've been watching alot of hunting shows as hunting season has approached, and I've noticed everytime they turn around they are endorsing a product. I realize that they have to have sponsors and have to sell the product, but I don't need to see a closeup of Hoyt on your bow or hear:"You've got to spray down with Scent Killer before you go out." while shoving the bottle in the camera to show you that is is in fact Scent Killer (or whatever product it is that they're using). I get that you have to have these sponsors and endorse and stuff, but that is why I have been getting away from bass fishing, especially the elite series. I would just like to see a show where they simply tell you what they do on a regular basis and show the hunt, like the rest of us see hunting. I don't need you to make me think that you saw a big buck just because you put some green slime on a tree. I don't mean to get on my soap box, but I just thought I would share that.

I don't watch too much of anything anymore honestly. I think I've gotten fatigued on watching bow kills of deer in the 6.5 y/o 180+ category. I still enjoy a few shows from time to time, but certainly nothing on my DVR timer.

Many years ago when VHS was getting started you could go out an rent/buy hunting shows that generated income strictly from the sale of the video. Sure they were cheesy, in comparison to today's highly edited show, but you can believe when a guy told you what he really liked, he truly believed in it. And when they killed a 130 class buck on public land it was more enjoyable to see IMHO.

Scbasshunter: check out major league bow hunters they have the commercials that endorse products but try do a really good job of explaining their hunts last weeks episode didn't even show a buck getting shot it showed encounters with deer and how they set up and what they did to learn more about deer movement.

I agree that advertisements and products being pushed on hunting shows are quite annoying.

But we must keep this in mind. This is how that world turns. Sponsors make it all happen for our favorite hunting personalities. Heck... None of us would know who Michael Waddell was if Realtree didn't sponsor him. Ads are a necessary evil to producing these shows. Many shows are over the top with this. I don't know of any hunting show that is a "how to" show. Most are just filmed exploits of famous hunting personalities. Shows that show doe shooting and coyote killing while deer hunting interest me the most.

Fred Eichler and Inside Outdoors seem to do this the most. 2 of my favs.

Part of the reason I don't watch much of the shows on tv anymore. A lot of the shows seem to be nothing more than an infomercial.

Yup....

Something else that is really getting to me is the need to turn hunting shows into modern entertainment. I love music of all sorts but I do not need to hear a Drop D tuning and power cords while a guy pulls his bow back. Its also turned into the "wild and crazy bunch" deer hunting. A lot of shows have over the top antics and its getting old...

Buck Commander is a great example. I love duck commander because they look like the kind of guys I would hang out with and just about anyone can kill a Mallard if you put the work in but Buck Commander is more about being in the club than anything.... or at least thats what I glean from the show. Thats the kind of junk I bypass... Now that Direct TV has made changes I only have the outdoor channel and half of the time its this over the top junk so I rarely watch a channel I pay for. That may change before long, they are losing me quick with this type of show.

Probably my favorite show right now is Midwestwhitetail online webisodes. it's the most informative show i've ever watched. they do plug stuff from their sponsors, but they show and tell you how they're using it and why it works. they show deer on there that are bigger than i could ever imagine hunting. yet it's still enjoyable. the summer velvet footage they get is just cool to watch.

Yep I watch Midwest Whitetail webisodes alot too. Bill Winke is a great host and they really seem to care more about teaching, and not so much about the killing. I really like how they show them hanging stands, and they pull out the aerial maps and breakdown what they are doing. Good stuff.

Yup X 2 William. I especially hate it when they break for a commercial right before the shot opportunity, then bring you back & replay part of the hunt up to that point...like we forgot. I'll 2nd what Ethan said about Midwest Whitetail. Good, informative show!

If you want to get away from commercials, your best bet is videos though. The only reason you're able to see hunting shows on TV is because of sponsors. I personally like Drury's videos best too but also like RT's & some others that have been in the business for a long time.

The main thing you need to have to be a successful hunter is woodsmanship skills. Learn as much about the game you're going to pursue as possible. You're not really going to learn that from TV shows. Sure, some will give you some tips but your best bet is learning the basics (if you don't already know them) from books, magazine articles, videos, and mentors and then hit the woods. JMHO
