Last month we bought this brand new 2012 impala, just made the first payment on the car last week. Wife took off with the car about a week and a half ago to help her little brother move to Oklahoma to start college. The other day I noticed a few little rust colored spots. Then I looked closer yesterday and found them all over. With the way it was on the hood, roof, trunk, and posts it kinda looks like something hit the car and splashed over while she was driving but I don't know. Possible she could also maybe have parked under something, she has no clue. I wiped off a few spots yesterday afternoon with a damp rag only to find that the clear coat underneath the spots is completely gone. Don't know what in the world it was, never seen this happen before. It almost looks like something acid based the way it ate the clear down to the base coat paint.

GM has had paint issues in the past, have not heard of any recent problems though. With not knowing what caused it, dunno if it is something the GM warranty might cover or not, guessing probably not. Anyone ever seen anything eat clear and leave a raised rust looking residue but leave the base coat?

Oh man, sorry to hear that. First payment....ouch! Nothing grinds my gears quite like trying to keep a new car looking that way. I have no idea what could cause that kind of damage, but I sympathize. Bought a left over Dodge Grand Caravan new last year. First new vehicle I've ever owned, I noticed some rust on the rear hatch, looks like shoddy paint job rather than damage. The AC evaporator just went, seems to be a fairly common problem in some Dodge/Jeeps. And just for good measure, I seem to have a recurring issue with the pasenger side sliding door motor. Every now and again it will open the door and get stuck in that position. I disconnect the battery and it resets and works fine for several weeks. Of course the new car warranty doesn't cover the evaporater or the paint and I cannot recreate the door issue for the mechanic. Makes me nuts! Good luck.

yea i've got an '03 cavalier. maybe not your case, but like clock work after the warranty was up the top coat came up in a spot on the rear quarter panel. slowly more of it has been flaking off. no rust and the base coat/primer is still there. looks like crap, but i couldn't imagine if it did it brand new.

If it's an external thing, caused by the elements or whatever, maybe insurance will repair it?

Yeah Chris, that was the first thing I thought, but problem there is our deductible is $500, by the time I have it fixed if I pay for it myself it probably would not cost much more than that out of pocket if I have the spots touched in. Thought crossed my mind to try some of the touchup clear and then just hit those spots with a light rubbing compound.

Dodge was pretty good on intermittent problems on our durango for us. Had issues with our wipers working when they wanted to and also with the hdd entertainment system, they took care of both. Actually went through a couple of the hard drives before they found out there was a problem and Chrysler sent out a fix on a dvd.

That bites William. I have known soda(cola) to be quite detrimental to a cars paint job. Sugar can dry like rust, especially cola and the morning dew can possibly melt/dilute it to disappear.

Hope it is something the dealer can assist you with in taking care of it.

Kinda thought the same on maybe being soda possibly. Don't know though it was not sticky like I would have expected from soda, looked more like rust colored bird crap to be honest.
