Shoobee
The 30-06 is a good cartridge for most all hunting in North America (and South America if you ever go there). It evolved as a long range military round intended for shooting at WW1 soldiers in trenches a long way across no mans land. It was one of the few military rifles that actually anticipated its appropriate use and need before it went into action in 1917. Since it was designed with a powder load for long range (600 yds or more) it works extremely well at close range (under 400 yds) and that is what makes it a really good round for big game. You can get a slightly better result with any of the 300 magnums, and they will also reach out further on big game as well. But otherwise the 30-06 will pretty much do it all. I like the 200 grain boat tails, and for this heavy bullet you most certainly need a 300. Edited August 30, 2012 by Shoobee
colorado bob
I use 180 grain bullets out of my Remington 700 LH. I've handloaded, I used 180 grain Nolser Solid Base and 180 Hornady spire point "interlock"-----I used those to kill elk, deer, black bear, antelope, moose, bighorn sheep & mtn goat. But as I've gotten older I'm using more factory ammo. I've been using Winchester PP & Remington core-lokts. They work just fine on elk & deer. They are also accurate enough for me. So when they go on sale, I'll buy them. That's the beauty of the 06---factory ammo is cheap & everywhere. My handloads were more accurate but factory loads are fine. My time is more important to me now than saving a few bucks on a box of ammo. Bob

Jeramie
Corelokt are a great over the counter soft point. Great bullets for the prices. I will shoot corelokt but I also handload Hornady BTSP.
speedjunkiejp
Thanks everyone. Just curious as its getting harder to find the hornady custom and have debated changing anyways.
dbHunterNY
yea i've shot a ton of different kinds, anything from 150gr to 180 gr. if you can get them to shoot well the 150gr Remington green box cor-lokts will do some damage and are easy to find. Same goes for winchest power points. I've used Federal Premium Nosler ballistic tips and Sierra Game kings in 150-180gr that work well too. I really think that the 150 gr bullets seem to hit harder and kick less than the 180gr ones. i think they don't punch through as much (wasting energy) and more energy is dissipated in the deer. Shoobee
Thanks everyone. Just curious as its getting harder to find the hornady custom and have debated changing anyways. A 180 grain bullet should perform astronomically better than anything less for a 30-06. The bullet is flying a little slower, and is heavier, which imparts more hydrostatic shock than something smaller.

iron buck
I handload but my 30-06 LOVEs Remington Corlokt 165's. It shoots just over 1/2" at 100 and holds well to 300 yards shooting right around 2".......I can't do better than that and the factory rounds are cheap

Shaun_300
I don't shoot .30-06 but my cousin does and uses nothing but 180gr Core-lokt's out of it. Great caliber. I have the faster brother of that caliber in .25-06, I use .30-06 casings all the time and resize them to .25-06 and handload.

I actually have no use for the .30-06. I bought it for the Mauser action which will, one day, be donated to a much more interesting project. m gardner
I've got one custom bolt action survival rifle in 30-06. It's a Scout type after Jeff Cooper's pattern. I shoot 165 grain Core Lokts through it because they are cheap. It will kill elk but I use Barnes Tipped TSX 165's then, which are too expensive to play around with normally. I've got a bunch of 150 grain spitzer Hornadays loaded for it too I need to go out into the desert and shoot rocks with.

too_pointer
I do not have a 30-06 right now, but had several in the past. They were Rem 742, 7400 semi-auto. I shot pretty much nothing but the Rem. Corlokt. Here where I live in Northern Mi. a 100 yard shot is even kind of rare. The price was great, very accurate, and I believe I used the 150 grain. In my .35 Rem. I'm shooting Hornady leverlution 200 grn. :gun2: too_
abrown
270 Remington with homegrown reloads..."DEADLY" What do you shoot? I have a 270, Remington LH with a Hart match grade barrel. I love the gun, but it seems like my wife's 25-06 with a 117 gr, does more to the deer than my 270. I hand load 140 Hornaday for my 270.
