Turkeygirl
Would like input on what would be good sabots for the TC Omega Z5 and pellets (vs. powder)? The guy I got the TC from gave me some powder in a flask and also Hornady Great Plains bullets, Remington and Triple 7 primers, and sabots/slugs he cast himself (they look like the TC Maxi-Balls). I think I want to go along the lines of pellets like the Pyrodex or whatever and pre-made sabots, just wondering what's a good bet to go with? Also cleaning supplies? whitetailfreak55
I use triple seven pellets with 285 grain power belts. Takes down deer
archerjg
The Omega that I have likes the 777 pellets (150 grain 3 pellets) using the TC shockwaves in 250 grain. They do put deer down and leave a good size hole on exit. As for cleaning supplies I just got the TC cleaning kit and the TC 17 works well to cut the fouling. dbHunterNY
i've used/use 777 pellets (110-150 grains), Hornady sst 250gr low drag sabots, and remington clean bore primers. problem is those polymer tipped ones are good for accuracy and long range, but hit or miss when it comes to blood trails. something odd about the muzzleloaders. if you're not shooting 200+ yards i'd go with a barnes expander or hornady xtp mag (big wide hollow point). dbHunterNY
...oh cleaning supplies. lighter fluid to rinse out gunk from the trigger group, any solvent cleaner for the breech plug, and TC bore solvent or foaming bore cleaner for the barrel. wipe the outside with a light coat of TC borebutter and use a light swab of it in the barrel until you take it out again. Turkeygirl
Been reading goodreviews on the Shockwaves in the Omega...wondering if I should go 200 grain or 250 grain? What's going to be the difference between the grain size in bullets and performace? I'm not expecting to hunt anything over 100 yards unelss I put scope on...just going open sights this year.If anything I'd expect most shots under 100. wtnhunt
Do yourself a favor Ruth and get some of the TC 240 grain xtp mags and see how your gun does with them, they are about $15 for 30. They are about the cheapest sabots on the market, and they are effective on deer. We use them with 120 grains of loose pyrodex out of our black diamond and it groups them very well. If I were buying powder, I would probably go with the blackhorn powder to give a try, but I bought several cans of triple 7 and a few of pyrodex at wally world one year on clearance so I still have a few. lol. Cleaning, like mentioned above the foaming cleaners work ok. Be sure when you put the gun up you leave a good coat of either a quality oil or try bore butter. archerjg
Agree with wtnhunt the XTP mags are great and shoot the same as the shockwaves out of my blackdiamond XR and the Omega. Wal Mart at least here had the 240 Grain XTP Mags in stock at least for now. Another powder that my cousin has good luck with is the white hot powder although I haven't tried it or the Blackhorn. As for the difference the 250 grain should have a little more knockdown power over the 200 grain, but either one should work. dbHunterNY
yea like william mentioned i'd go with blackhorn 209 powder. my problem is i can't find it anywhere around here. with NY laws the shops can carry the pellets easy enough, but the loose powder requires a separate fire proof shed so many feet from any structure. Not many places have that kind of room.
wtnhunt
What's going to be the difference between the grain size in bullets and performace? For the most part your heavier bullets with same powder charges will not be traveling as fast or have as flat a trajectory, but will carry more energy to a point, you would have to look at ballistic tables to get a better idea. TC manuals used to have a table in them with popular combinations. Personally I prefer a hollow point for ml'er hunting. Like I said before, those 240 xtp's work well, great expansion and fairly flat shooting with 120 grains of powder.
Turkeygirl
Well I'm thinking tomorrow there may be some shooting going on;) Got a box from Cabelas today, decided to go with Shockwave 250 grain, Triple 7 50 grain pellets, got some cleaning stuff today but they sent me the .45 cal instead of .50 cal cleaning accessories so have to make a return. All I've read online are good reviews about this muzzleloader. So part of me hopes I have a tag left for muzzeloader season, lol!
dbHunterNY
it's addictive... just keep it clean and clean it asap after a hunt or you shoot. Triple Seven works well but it bad stuff to leave in the barrel.
Turkeygirl
Should I clean after every shot or every couple shots?
wtnhunt
Should I clean after every shot or every couple shots? Would practice just like a hunting situation. For practice I run a spit patch and dry patch between shots, the black diamond we shoot with the loads we run through it group well that way. Some powders and sabots in some guns you will have to clean the barrel sooner than others.
dbHunterNY
Would practice just like a hunting situation. For practice I run a spit patch and dry patch between shots, the black diamond we shoot with the loads we run through it group well that way. Some powders and sabots in some guns you will have to clean the barrel sooner than others. what william said is also what i do. wet and dry patch down the barrel after every shot when i'm checking it or sighting in. if you practice this you can even do it in a hunting situation. try loading a second shot and firing it off to see if you can though without cleaning. first check if you can load it and seat the sabot, and then check to see it's close enough to your first shot. regardless, you'll need to keep an eye down range though when hunting just in case your game regains its senses to get up and run off a little more somewhere. this way you'll know where it went. out in OK i shot my buck through the heart. watched it barely run behind a cedar. i reloaded quick and only had my eyes down a second or two at a time. somehow it managed sneak away and make it another 35 yards behind some other cedars without me seeing it. there was no blood, but it was a perfect shot and luckily a quick grid search was all it took.
