It Was The Perfect Plan But ... .

It was the perfect plan.

I had scouted this hunting site and located 5 mature bucks in it.

During bow season I had hunted it but could not get close enough to the bucks in it to take a try at them, the terrain not being conducive to a close stalk.

So during rifle season which has just opened along the California coast, I followed an old abandoned road, which deer natually love, and used it to navigate up above were I had found all the live beds with fresh droppings in them during archery season to be.

From my high vantage, I had then hoped to hike down, slowly and quietly, until I could sight the bucks below me, and put the crosshairs on one of them from a greater distance than archery allows.

Unfortunately for me, however, and older man, not able to make the hike I was making, had parked his truck just below the bucks, and hiked straight up into their beds, which succeded only in chasing them out ahead of him. And while not giving him a running shot like he wanted, with his repeating Winchester 30-30, which was his strategy, he did manage to scare the two bucks out onto the roadway, where a couple of roadhunters shot them both.

It was the perfect plan. But it was foiled by 2 roadhunters and an old man. And as Robert Burns said in 1785, the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft aglei and bring us naught but grief and pain.

When I got back to the hunting shed, I noted that 3 other bucks had already been bagged, for a total of 5, in that area, that day. I had earlier heard the gunfire from the other side of the ridge from me. That then accounted for all my pre-scouted bucks. Guess I should have scouted more elsewhere as well. But after finding 5, I really thought this would be sufficient.

yup happened to me last season... they weren't even all mature either. good thing is if the surrounding area is decent enough other bucks will move into the area.

There are a couple of dozen doe's with fawns of various ages hanging around in the same area, so I have no doubt that by next season, another bachelor clan will develop and inhabit the same spot. The topography is perfect for them, and the leaking water tank keeps them supplied with water. It will take time for the new clan to grow up and leave their mothers though. They will most likely form-up when the big bucks drive away the young bucks during the rutting season in winter, as usual.

Dang...that's a bummer!!! I'd have a hard time convincing myself to put that kind of effort into hunting that spot again. Good chance the roadhunters will be back now that they've bagged a couple of bucks.

You are exactly right, the roadhunters will surely make it their honey spot.

The old man told me he plans to come in from the road too next time, rather than hike up from the water tank.

Either way, that spot will be crawling with hunters again next year. And it will be a race, to see who flushes them out and gets a shot first.
