Democrats' platform calling for more gun control

"We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few."

I'm moving this to the political thread after I post...

The more I watch our elect idiots the more I think sometimes they do these things to raise concern and then use it as a red hearing to keep our eyes and ears away from things that are really important.

I honestly believe the Democrats were all for the “Where’s Obama’s birth certificate” run we had as a nation. Everyone was so worried about it most weren’t paying attention to the fact that he was a loser from the start and was never fit to run this country. The man had never so much as ran a Dairy Queen beforehand but it didn’t get NEAR the press the birth certificate did.

I also think in times like this using the assault weapon angle doesn’t hurt most of the democratic vote. Most liberals are against assault weapons anyway so by bringing it up again they take the focus off of the last 4 years the looser in chief has been driving our economy and country into the dirt.

They know they have a very, very small percentage of the Republican vote so they aren’t too worried about losing that vote...

Mark my words, its calculated....

I'll agree with this.

They almost got it ver batim from Romney himself:

“I believe the people should have the right to bear arms, but I don’t believe that we have to have assault weapons as part of our personal arsenal,” he said on Fox News in 2004.

The federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004

Brady folks supported Obama before the 2008 election, during this term those folks have clearly become a little frustrated with him over his not following through with his promises to them. While I don't agree with or like what Romney said on awb in the past I don't believe that Romney has had any support from Brady or any other gun grabbing organizations, and he has Ryan(a hunter) as a running mate. When it comes to our second ammendment rights I have no doubt whatsoever that a Romney/Ryan admin would be less likely to attempt to strip away any of our rights than Obama/Biden.

Both parties will from time to time come up with things that may sound unconstitutional.

It is the US Supreme Court who are the guardians of what is and is not constitutional.

Scalia's opinions on behalf of the majority serve as the standing rules for determination at the moment.

Not the president, whoever is president, or the VP, or the Speaker, or the Senate President, etc.

No one challenged the Federal ban of 1994 - 2004 nor Romney's Massachusetts ban of 2004+.

With 60% of the American public being non-gun-owning, it is easy to see why these bans or talk of such bans is popular. So I can see why Romney in his heart favors them, even though he has flip flopped and denied it, and why the DNC has put it on their platform.

There are lots of things on either party's platform that never gets initiated however. Such as balanced budgets and right to life amendments by the Republicans.

As to what the USSC would do in the case of another ban, who knows?

Scalia's words seem to indicate that handguns and legitimate hunting rifles are safe, at both the federal and the state level. And that 2A applies to the states as well, glad we finally settled that after 240 years.
