Tominator
Tossed out some sorghum and turnip seed the other day and it's coming up already. It will be interesting to see if it attracts the deer. Doesn't really matter, because I'm going to run that old Oliver anyway, lol.
wtnhunt
Pics, pics, where's the pics. lol. Got to see that ollie at work. You think the sorghum will have enough time Chris? This is about the latest I would probably plant it here. Sorghum will attract them though, once it frosts a few times they will eat the seedheads. I planted sorghum with our spring/summer plots here. Seems turnips in these parts are hit 'n miss, heard some people have fair results with them late season, deer around us will only eat the leaves the first few days after a hard frost then they don't touch em anymore. Tominator
I doubt they will have enough time for a seed head William, but it usually acts like a winter wheat around here if it stays mild like it did last year. I gave a ton of turnip seed to my buddy a few years ago, and he said their deer tore them up, so we'll see what happens. I'm surrounded in corn this year, so as soon as they take it out, I'll be out there picking up and stacking the waste seed. I'm trying to find a source of apples too. dbHunterNY
should get hammered i think after they pick or chop the corn. good luck with the apples, there're not doing as well this from everywhere i know of. maybe you'll stumble upon some though. dogdoc
i bet your turnips will draw them out--especially after a good freeze. I always include a little sorghum in my spring plantings. those deer love the seed heads come winter but never seen them actually eat the green forage. good luck Chris. Tominator
Checked my plot yesterday. Sorghum has germinated, but it's pretty stunted. Cold nights aren't doing it any favors I think. Turnips have germinated too. Too early to tell if they will take off. Annual ryegrass in the garden has germinated, that's up by the house, I only grow it to keep erosion down and replacing nitrogen, but the deer will eat it too. Picked up some apples from my neighbor's lawn (used to be my apple trees), and I'm going to set those out next time I hunt.
Tominator
Turnips are up and doing very well. They're about 4" tall. This warm stretch should help too I think. Unfortunately, the frosts we had a few weeks ago zapped the sorghum.
Tominator
3 deer in the patch Wednesday morning.
wtnhunt
Thats cool Chris. Watched a little one with my 11 year old over the weekend stand on its hind legs trying to reach some seed from sorghum, kinda entertaining. Real curious about this years radish/brassicas mix I put in. Have had a couple good frosts the past few nights with a good hard frost this morning. If the deer are gonna eat the stuff they should be hitting it some now.
