ALAN Posted September 19, 2012 Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 Pretty soon I wanna start bow hunting...I am very new to it as I have never shot a bow in my life....Is there such a thing as a good starter bow...I am kinda on a budget dont have alot of money to spend on one....I had a guy tell me to look at garage sales you can pick them up for around $ 40.00 to $ 50.00....I looked at some garage sales most around here sell clothes,house hold stuff...Had a guy try selling me one and he wanted $ 1,000 firm for it...It would take me years to even save up enough money for that Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

robbiethekid Posted September 19, 2012 Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 A first timer bow I'm not gonna lie to ya bud bow hunting tends to get expensive. I know myself I have probably about $1,500 in my bow and setup. But if you are looking for something cheap to start off with try Craigslist and if you have trading post in you're area try that and look for a " bear whitetail 2" bow. dbHunterNY Posted September 19, 2012 Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 you don't need to spend $1k on a hunting bow all setup ready to go. i think every bow setup i've got was more than that new, when all said and done. there's a lot of bow packages you can pick up brand new for $400. they'll still kill a deer. that said you can pick up used bows setup for less that are nicer than the new $400 setups. I sold a great Martin on there with arrows, loaded with a drop away rest for $200 about two years ago. It was a deer killing machine. You can also find starter bows for say $50 - $100.00. Just take someone who knows how to hunt with a bow so they can look it over for damage. Also, the PSE Nova is a low end bow that slings arrows fine. If youre really just trying to get a feel for the sport look for a Nova. They will be cheap but arent horrible bows. A lot of bow hunters cut their teeth on the old Nova. Measure your wing span from finger tip to finger tip. Take that span and divide by 2.5 to get draw length. also, you can take that wing span number, subtract 15 from it, and then take that divided by 2. My future wife has the model that bow replaced. They're both basically the same, except the new one more adjustment. you can adjust the draw weight and length without a bow press or taking it to a shop. also with so much adjustment it makes it perfect to hand down to kids. dbHunterNY Posted September 21, 2012 Report Share Posted September 21, 2012 we can give you tips and tell you what not to do. also someone is around you that shoots a bow and usually bowhunters love to talk about shooting bows. it'll be a learning experience and take a little time, but you can adjust everything you need yourself, with input from a knowledgable person, given the Razor Edge's design. The manual you get tells you a lot too. i or some other knowledgable person could tell you what and how to do everything you'd need to get started. it'd be quicker and a lot easier to buy it some place and have the store setup it up for you for free. or you could buying it and bring it to an archery shop, but they'll most likely charge you to set it up. as you said places aren't really close so if you need anything done to it and don't know how to do it, then you're at the mercy of the 100 miles drive. lol all you need to know right now is don't order it, take it out of the box, pull it back, and then just let it go. letting the string go with no arrow is very bad and called dry firing the bow. ALAN Posted September 22, 2012 Author Report Share Posted September 22, 2012 I think I just found a bow here is what I found guy wants $150.00 for it the bow is a Diamond darton (anyone heard of it) here is what comes with it... Arrows, target points, new three way razor heads, trigger,string wax, hard plastic case, shooting block. Not shure how many arrows for sure? 12 maybe? Thinking 6 never shot. guy thinks it also has the drop away pin and a 4 or 5 pin true glow site.....6 arrows are carbon wolverine never shot with three of them with 130 to maybe 150ngrain broad heads?guy thinks they are 130 grain. ALAN Posted September 23, 2012 Author Report Share Posted September 23, 2012 how does this sound guy who has bow sent me the numbers etc off the bow... bow is as follows....Its a Darton viper, it says 55-70 pounds, with a 65 to 70 percent let off. says leingth of 29-32" hopefully it will be a good starter bow for me for awhile untill i can afford to upgrade into something nicer and better? True enough you may find out a bow has so many inches of draw length, but you will also find out many models require modules to change draw length. Narrow your search by first getting more details of what fits you. Lots of folks out there like me that get rid of perfectly good equipment for a fraction of what we put into it. You should really do your part first and find out your length and draw weight. What happens when you buy a bow with 60-70lb limbs and you discover you can't draw 60?
