Jeramie Posted September 19, 2012 Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 Just before season... eek. :surrender: So her is the deal. I’ve had the bike for 3-years. It’s been a great bike. I let a couple of teenage girls ride on my place over the summer. They found a mud hole. They came back covered from head to toe... the bike had started cutting out on them. They rode back to the house. I washed the bike and rode it. It would start right up but dog seriously bad when you gave it throttle. If you choke the bike 75% you could go about half throttle with no problems. Beyond half throttle it would dog again. I figured they fowled the plug so I bought a new NGK and put it in the bike. Still having the same issues. I rode the bike around for a while with 75% choke and then eventually one day it started running about 90%. I could turn the choke off and the bike would run almost full throttle without issue. Suddenly and without cause my battery died. I tried to start the bike with a battery charger but it still wouldn’t really turn over. I do get mostly clicking so I’m guessing solenoid. I did jump the screws and it turned over a little but was dragging and didnt start. The bike will pull start.... On to last night. I had parked the bike in the storage building for about a month. It took quite a while to start it but it did finally start. Right back to dogging when you throttle it. If you put it at 75% choke it would run good enough to at least drive around. It hit me that maybe the carb needed drained so I turned the screw and let quite a bit of gas run out. I then took the air box top off, pulled the filter and started it. When I throttle the bike I get really good suction in the air box. The muffler is kicking out what seems to be plenty of air so Im pretty darn sure its not air side. The spark plug is almost brand new... I put it all back together and now its dogging like crazy, even with the choke on. Any ideas? I use this thing all during deer season and duck season. Jeramie Posted September 19, 2012 Author Report Share Posted September 19, 2012 So ive been doing some internet research. One site I found suggest replacing the stator coil. It said the bad coil will keep it from charging the battery and will not provide good enough of a spark for the quad to run (too much air, not enough spark). That makes sense as it runs ok if I choke it back and then really cuts out if I throttle it. It would then be getting too much gas. Also, not too long ago it started back firing on occasion.....not real bad but a little. The lights are dimmer than they used to be and it will not start with an almost new battery.. thoughts? Dunno if you are running ethanol free gas or not, seems someone told me most stations in oklahoma had ethanol free gas. Also speaking from experience with yamahas, take a look at the choke needle by unscrewing the little but where the choke cable ends in the carb. I have replaced mine twice because the spring rusts out that pushes the needle in. Charging issues can also be a bad ground connection to the frame.
