92xj
Going to go out and try something new next weekend. Since I am tagged out on Deer and Bear, the only 2 tags left are cougar and elk. My elk season doesnt start till November so now it's time to chase some cat. Going to hit the woods next weekend for a first time cougar hunt. The plan.... Head out a few miles off the path into the unkown. I have seen cougars in this area before so hopefully they are still around. Going to take the bow for this trip. Going to sit and call. This is where it could go not as planned since I will be in the middle of wolf country with some grizzlies thrown in as well as black bears. It is going to be an intense experience no matter what happens. Even if I dont see a single thing, I would bet my truck that a set of eyes will be placed on me. Can't wait for the thrill. No doubts there Ben. Good luck with the hunt, hope you stick a cat and look forward to seeing some pics. That would be one of those hunts I think I would have to carry a sidearm. texastrophies
To hunt or to be hunted? That is the question.
dbHunterNY
cats are pretty elusive when they want to be, from what i've heard. good luck and don't become dinner! watch for rocky out crops and high points. i'm told they're cat magnets. some day it'd be cool to get a cat with a bow and still live to tell about or remember. elkoholic
There was an elk hunter here in Montana that got mauled by a grizzly that came to his elk calling just this past week. Another elk hunter dispatched a wolf, he had a wolf tag, that came to his elk calling just a few miles east of where I live. So, stay alert and carry bear spray. If a cat comes in you more than likely will have a head on shot at an animal getting ready to unleash a tooth and claw attack in an attempt to make you their dinner. Good hunting, it is all good fun. 92xj
I'm not scared, sheesh! Got most everything packed up. Hitting the road tomorrow mid day. 3 hour drive to the cabin and then an hour past that to the unknown where I will be hunting. I will try and take some pics and post when I get back....if I make it! For hunting lions alone, it is best to have a big knife on your belt. Incidents report that often times the cat is on your back before you know it. But these incidents were for non-hunters. For hunting cats, an over-under shotgun/30-30 seems like the best bet. And a pistol, as was said before.
i'm your huckleberry
One thing to keep on your mind hunting cougar, the hunter may become the hunted. If your local laws allow it take a pair of good dogs with you, they will usually keep the cat off your back so you can perforate the cat. stevebeilgard
dogs are a bad idea in griz country. they go charge the bear then run back to their master when the bear chases them. not so good a thing....
92xj
I'm alive. No dogs allowed in this state. No cougars this trip, only a bear and a wolf. Got word of a cougar 10 miles from where I was. Hoping to get some good snow in the next few months and start chasing tracks.
stevebeilgard
if dogs are allowed for cats, use them. get a few hounds and you'll have a blast.
