Full day in the stand.. what do you do/ bring?

I have a hunt coming up in a couple of weeks where I will be spending two and a half days in the stand. Even though im in my 30's I have only hunted one full day from a stand once. Most of the time I take a break and head back to the house for a few hours...

Any tips, items that come in handy other than the basics (food, water, TP, etc)? Im pretty patient and plan on bringing the Kindle and some new books but am open to other things to make this more comfortable.

I will hopefully be about 10' up in a summit.... base answers off of that porfavor...

1st of all...don't look at your watch. It doesn't matter anyway and you'll tend to start thinking about the time, counting hours & minutes rather than relaxing and taking in the whole experience going on around you. Take more water than you think you'll need too. Sucks to run out & I tend to drink more in the afternoon when it warms up. I'm not a reader in the stand at all, even if I'm hunting from daylight to dark. I'd rather use my binocs & check things out going on around me and looking through brush. If reading helps you stay there, do it but keep checking the area for movement. It easy to miss something or get surprised if your attention is in a book. I know some people that will play games on their cell phone. I don't but it's something to help pass the time if you want. I like to text a buddy & share my hunt as it unfolds during the day. Only started doing that the last couple of years though.

I do my best to stay focused on what is going on around me. I listen to the other animals and they will alert you to a deer sometimes before you can see it or hear it yourself. After I check out every fluttering leaf for the tenth time and I'm seeing deer behind every tree out of the corner of my eye, I shoot a few texts out to the girlfriend letting her know which stand I'm in or if I plan on checking cams after the hunt, check a few emails, check the forums here etc., then resume the ever so slow investigation of every dark shape and moving twig. It seems to be harder some days than others but if you have a good set up near a heavily used water source seeing deer is pretty consistent and helps make the long hours adrenaline filled and tolerable

10 foot? Bowhunting? if so, please share your brand of scent killer...I have been busted every time I try to stay under 20 feet. just to clarify, I'm not trying to be sarcastic at all... I could save a lot of time and money not hanging stands 25-30 feet up.

Wow... I rarely hunt higher than 10 - 12' I have killed as many deer using limbs on a white oak as I have ever using a tree stand. With the limbs on most of our oak trees 10' is as high as you can get anyway.

I wash my camo in scent free soap and add a little baking soda. I then hang dry them outside and they never come in the house again until after season. I hang them typically in a tree out front or put them in my barn when heavy rain is headed in and I plan on hunting. If rain comes in on Monday and I plan on hunting on Friday I let it rain on them.

Other than that I use scent free soap, scent free deodorant, and then spray down with real earth before heading to the stand. I also wear rubber boots (alpha burley). I have been hunting deer for 22 years and have killed countless... never had problems with deer scenting me at those heights. I have been busted by movement but the largest deer I have ever seen in the stand, I was literally at about 8'-9' on an impromptu hunt. I killed smaller buck and had him follow the grunt in. I would have had him too but I coughed and he busted me before I could get drawn.

I usually bring beef jerky and Pepperidge Farms fruit filled cookies and Ritz crackers.

That will get me though most of the morning or afternoon.

And apple is nice too. The green Granny Smith kind.

Never seen a buck yet between 10 a.m. and 4 pm so during those times you can go back to camp and sleep.

Normally like to be on a stand from before light to 10 a.m., and from 3:30 pm to after dark.

You can then eat your main meal in camp at noon, or you can cook it after dark.

I prefer a big lunch, so I can have a snack and hit the sack (sleeping bag) at night when I get back instead of cooking.

Well Jeramie you can always sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall 99 bottles of beer...Take one down and pass it around 98 bottles of beer on the wall...:rock:EVERYBODY Sing...LOL...

Yah I'm sure that would be great for your aim.

I like one or two beers before bedtime. That's all.

I am constantly glassing with my binos, and listening.

Usually just take something to drink like water or Gatorade, and maybe some beef jerky and some hard candy like jollyranchers or somethin.

I rarely set all day. During the rut I try to set till noon, take a couple hour break, and get back in the stand.

Never seen a buck yet between 10 a.m. and 4 pm so during those times you can go back to camp and sleep.

I have, especially in November.

Had a good 10 pointer chase a doe across a field in front of me a few years ago around 4pm in early November.

I missed a nice buck on the second weekend of November 3 years ago at around 3:30pm

This past season I saw a buck chasing on November 11th at around noon or so

and the next morning on November 12th I saw a NICE 8 cruising at about 11:00am.

If its the rut, I dont care what time of day it is, it can happen.

The rut is a totally different story, true.

In Calif we are not allowed to hunt the rut. Too easy, I guess.

Too easy??? True you have a better chance of seeing a buck but they are far from stupid... The calling and scents only work if he's in that mood. I've never been able to call a buck off a doe or from pushing one. They will stop they will look but they know its better to stick to that sweet honey in front of him than to leave her

I only sit all day during those prime early-mid November days. I go high - 20-30 feet in a comfortable stand. Take food and water. Pee down the tree - i have never found deer to get spooked from human urine, actually had some come in to scent check it. When sitting all day I like a spot I can see a ways off and use my binoculars. Harness in good in case you fall asleep.
