hoosierhunter
I'm looking for a very knowledge and experienced crossbow person to answer this. No offense to anyone else but I'd prefer only KNOWN answers based on experience. Dad bought on this year. I know nothing about them. He bought the Barnett quad 400. Why broad heads do you recommend. Will a fixed blade fly correct out of a now this fast? Scope recommendation for it. Effective range- first let me say I know I can group waaayyyy farther than this thing is capable of killing ethically at. I'm planning on telling him 50. Does anyone know if the bolts lose energy faster than a standard arrow? How do you let them down without firing. He only has a hand crank. Thanks in advance. gameslayer
hi i've shot the g5 montec fixed and the rage 2" expandable and find the rage shoots more accurately with passthroughs. deer died right in it's tracks last friday didnt go 2 yrds. personally i think the effective range on a deer is an ethical 40 yards or less because the xbow is louder than a bow and the animal will spook easier. i personally believe that a bolt will lose energy faster because they are heavier than an arrow but they are faster with more punch . you can get a block to fireoff at the end of your hunt or you can buy a biodegradeable let off arrow but you'll need lots so you'll be better off with a block. btw once sited in you can robin hood the bolts under 30 yrds oh and the fletching stayes glued to a carbon bolt better than an aluminium bolt if you're shooting a fast xbow
High Country
While crossbows are fast (Ghost 350), sound is still far faster (@ 1100 fps or so)...so effective range is only about 40 yards or so...otherwise, the deer will react and not necessarily predictably... I am shooting the 2-blade Rage with good results... Keep a bolt with a "dull / blunted" field point on it and a target to unload the Xbow...much safer than letting off by hand... swohiodave
I have shot 100gr thunderheads out of mine for years and they fly fine but I'm only shooting around 260fps. To let it down i shoot an old target arrow into the ground once i am out of the woods or wait until i get home and shoot a target from about 5 feet. Hope this helps some. jesse8953
I shoot a excaliber.I would say 35 no more than 40 yards because of the sound of a crossbow.I shoot the 100 grain nap spitfire and they work great! I also have a feild point in my quiver to unload the crossbow.
