wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Cannot say what will work best for your gun, different guns perform different with different bullet powder combinations. That said, I would try the 240 tc xtp mags. They are economical and they effective. The black diamond the wife and I have shared for years like a powder charge of 120 grains of pyro. If I were buying powder I would probably go check into the blackhorn powder. You would have to work up your loads to see what your gun likes best. High Country
I have a Wolf...I set it up to hunt at Fort Knox military base (though I tend to use my Remington M1100 shotgun) that has strict requirements... 250 gr Shockwave with 100 gr Pyrodex RS delivers very good accuracy (> 2 inches @100 yds) and delivers good results on game... but is difficult to load, especially after a few shots... 240 gr Powerbelt Aero with 100 gr Pyrodex RS delivers good accuracy (> 3 inches @ 100 yds) with good performance on deer... and is much easier to load The fun part of a muzzleloader is trying to figure out what it really likes...unless the Army tells you what to shoot! gameslayer
thanks high country i'll try sighting it in ths wknd. do you think that theres a cleaner burning powder to help the shockwave load better after a couple shots? High Country
I have heard that a few bp substitutes are cleaner than Pyrodex (Jim Shockey's American Pioneer Gold brand of low sulfur powder, etc), but the Walmart's / Kmart's don't carry it...so it would require either a nice little trip out-of state to a Bass Pro or Cabela's or a substantial Haz-Mat charge for shipping for me... The shockwave bullet performed beautifully on deer...complete penetration through both shoulders, about a 3 inch wide hole (entrance side) + 1 1/2 inch exit...the deer wheeled and went about 10 feet after the shot... You might try the super-glide sabots for them (I never have since trying the powerbelts)...I think TC even recognized that the original sabots were hard to load... My father has tried a whole bunch of different ML bullets and settled on the Powerbelt 295 grain HPs after a very memorable year of hunting...couple of deer, a massive boar, etc and all were DRT (Powerbelt 295 gr HP + 120 grains Pyrodex RS + TC Grayhawk rifle). wtnhunt
I would not suggest shockey's gold. Tried it here and was not at all impressed, groups opened way up from pyrodex. If I were going to something other than pyro or triple 7 it would be to blackhorn. A spit patch dry patch between shots goes a long ways with making loading easier between shots too. gameslayer
sighted it this passed wknd and i'm grouping 2" at 80 yrds with 100grain pyrodex, 250grain powerbelt aerolites with federal 209 shotgun primers
jnestle
I tried American Pioneer and had disasterous results. Terrible groups and inconsistent ignition. Had several instances where the powder clearly did not completely burn. It just sort of went "poof" and the bullet barely made it out of the barrel. I have never had a problem with pyrodex or triple
LETMGROW
There is a simple solution to loading the second, third or more bullets while sighting in your MZ. CLEAN that gun thoroughly between each and every shot! Forget quick and dirty fixes. If you are going to hunt, you are going to do this with a clean barrel. At least I would hope so. Consistent bullet impact is dependant on everything being the same each shot. Not doing a good cleaning between each shot will create a crud ring just ahead of the flash hole which can cause incomplete ignition and residue in the barrel which will create bullet drag. You can "chase" a bullet hole all over the target trying to get the gun sighted in. It seems like a lot of work but with the cleaning systems available today it is easier than ever. The sooner you clean a MZ after you discharge it, the less chance you have for rust to form and eventually pit the barrel. Lynn
