No need to 2nd guess yourself about passing the 40 yard shot for a closer, higher percentage shot Tim. Swirling winds is just a part of bowhunting, especially the early season. More often than not you win...sometimes you don't. I had a 35 yard shot on the doe I let get closer & smoked her at 21 yards Saturday. My buddy had a big hog coming in Friday afternoon...swirling wind got him with the pig closing in at 20 yards and no angle for a shot at that point. He had one at 35 but, like you was waiting for the chip shot. Tomorrow is another day...another opportunity. Backstraps on the hoof are coming for you soon.
