tvman44
Does anyone use the Thermacel in a vertical position attached to say their belt? Thermacel says it should not be used in a vertical position as it will affect the life of the unit. Wonder if this is just the lawyers CYA talk. wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Really not sure, but maybe something to do with how effective it works. Heat rises and the pad is directly over the burner, if it is vertical the slot allows a lot of the heat to rise out without heating the pad as much. Only time I carry mine in the holster up and down like you are talking about is to and from the stand, once in the stand I set it flat, if in a stand I can strap it to I do so it won't be kicked out of the stand. I have carried the one I am using now with it running while walking maybe that might have something to do with why it does no good for the gnats and deer flies. Don't think it has shorted the life of the unit in any way, at least I don't think it has. Have another one I have never carried in a holster with it on, only carried in a backpack and the butane cartridges on it will leak down if you leave one in it. Don't really know of any other failures they have with them other than the striker going bad.
redkneck
Use mine almost exclusively vertical. Keep out in the holster generally. Been using it several years.
dbHunterNY
not sure why they'd say that. i've used mine in a holster and vertical to my belt at the 3d outdoor archery league all summer long and before that it's attached to my turkey vest also vertical. i think that it works better laid down. more of the heat will go directly to through the pad, so it'll start working quicker and throw more smoke out the vent instead of balling up in the unit. however, like i and others have said we use it a lot in the vertical position. Flintlock1776
I hang it on my deer stand or ground blind vertical. I don't even recall the instructions saying it should be horizontal. In a ground blind make sure you have plenty of ventilation
Adjam5
I have always burned mine flat. Knowing that heat rises and is needed to heat the pad and give off scent. Kind of makes sense that the heat going upward would cause a few issues. But John says he uses his exclusively vertical...Hmmm. The only I have had with them is like William said the striker goes bad. But they have made good on that when I sent it back.
