So you read it, what does it mean to you?

Please note, in this thread you can:

Give your opinion on the subject in any manner you like

Talk about God

Not talk about God

Talk about memories made in the field back in the good ol days

Talk about how hunting has improved or isn't what it used to be

But please answer the thread question first.

Hunting means to me a way to go have fun, relax, be with family, friends, and see the great way to see the outdoors the way it is. I think about go when i get an animal and thank him for every chance. I do miss having our lease in GA though. That is where i got my first 3 deer and i'll never forget any of them. I wish i could have hunted back when my grandfather was alive and i wish i could have hunted the way they did. Ridin around on a buggy having a good time with friends. Unfortunately that will never happen because he passed back in 2008 and now you can only ride designated trail and we sold our buggy a while back because of it. I think about him every day though. :(

What does hunting mean to me?

It means another season away from town, crazy people. It means ignoring the world. Sitting on the family farm. Reminiscing all the memories. Thinking about my fore fathers. Thinking about how they hunted. What they saw. What they did. Hunting is my life. It's what we do every fall. Never missed a season. I've spent every firearm season sitting next to a tree with my dad. That won't be this year due to him having spine surgery. I know he will text me every 5 minutes. What'd you see? Any deer? Is he dead yet? Where's my venison? Lol

Sitting there in nature. Enjoying every thing. Relaxing more than non hunters can imagine. Walking those fields every weekend. Walking the same places my ancestors did. As well as the Sac Osage Indians. It's very spiritual. I look forward to it more than anything. Hunting is a way of life. I'm proud of how I was raised. I'm proud to be a hunter. I'm proud even when an arrow or shell isn't let loose. It means learning something new every year. It's what makes us predators. It's in our DNA.

What does hunting mean to you?

Hunting to me is a get away from life and all the crap. It's relaxing I can sit and just watch or surf the forum a little like I am now. I can reflect on the week ponder about things I'm doing and get away from the bs.

Great to spend the time with the family to seems like hunting and fishing are the only time we all get together with how busy we all are.

Hunting is my passion, something that has been a part of my life since I was born. I cant live a day without thinking about it in some way. There is a never ending drive deep inside to be in pursuit of prey. I love the challenge, the preparation, the strategy, and the thrill of hunting. Ever since I was old enough to walk, I have been in the woods. I am always trying to expand my knowledge, whether its tree identification, or how to do TSI or plant better foodplots. I have a love for the outdoors, and a deep respect for the animals I pursue. I cant imagine my life without it, because I have invested so much of my life to it. Its an emotional thing really, what hunting means to me.

just about everything. makes you reflect on things you wouldn't normally think about. helps you appreciate everything around you, making you realize there's more to life than what's in your little bubble of personal space. it has taught me responsibility and values. fulfilling knowing you can take game out in the wild, process it, cook it, and put it on the table to feed your family if need be.

most of all it to me is an American tradition i've shared with family and friends. my dad's always busy working on something or getting something done. only memories i've got on us just enjoying each others company are of when we go hunting together. not only that but it's something you can share with a complete stranger. i don't know how many times i've struck up a convo with a person in a sporting goods store. i've never known them in my entire life and yet we'd talk like we're long lost friends.

I grew up in NYC not hunting or shooting until I was about 20(48 now) , but was always interested in the outdoors. I live and am raising my family 40 miles north north west of NYC. I still work in NYC and currently am at Ground Zero working on the 9/11 memorial. I am around fast fast, loud and lots of crowds all day. I cannot wait to hear the nothing that my tree stand delivers. Hunting means the ability to be in tune with nature and it surroundings. Time to appreciate all of the wonderful things God has created for us to enjoy. Because this world we are in, just didn't happen. Through hunting I have shared many great experiences with my 3 sons and strenghtend bonds with friends and family. There is not a day that goes by that I do not talk about hunting or educate someone about nature, hunting and land management. I live for the weekend so I can hi tail it out of the BIG city, and I mean big city. To our country house/hunting camp in NY's Catskills... Every weekend. I mean ...EVERY weekend. We are fortunate to have 63 acres that we manage wildlife and timber on. I have given my sons the hunting/shooting bug real bad. I always tell them...Ain't you glad Daddy didnt take up stamp collecting? My wife is supportive, but not into anything outdoors. A city gal all the way.

She don't know where I got my Redneck from. Nor do I.

I trap/hunt/fish/shoot and reload. I feel so right doing the aforementioned. Made some great friends along the way too.

Killing something is a plus. But a not necessary part of enjoying the outing.

But a hunter is who I am and what I do. Right down to killing rats on the job:D.

I don't honestly know anymore.

It used to be a way to hang out with my dad and uncles.

Then it was a blood sport, competitive, forsake most everything including friends just to kill something.

Then it was a way to get away from it all, solace, alone time, peace.

Then some big life changes with family and health and it became a catharsis to hunt with friends, I didn't care to go out alone, the kill didn't mean as much to me.

Now...more life changes and health issues that have spread to my 2 sons and wife, and now...I honestly don't know what hunting means to me.

I know what I want it to be, but I can't make that happen just yet.

Hunting is a way of relaxation, connecting with nature, spending time with family, ect. I'm sure I could keep going on an on with reasons that many of you undoubtedly share. A few years ago I ran across this question on another forum, and this morning I went back and reviewed what I said then. I think that I now have a greater understanding of why hunting, and fishing, means so much to me, but this is still the easiest, most profound way that I can describe it. Below is my answer from 3 years ago.

When I am asked what drives me hunt, I simply answer that it fills my need. That response usually leads to the follow up question "What need?". I can only think of one way to explain it:

I ask that person to take as deep a breath as possible and hold it.

After 30 seconds their face is starting to turn red and I'm on the recieving end of a very questioning look. "Keep holding it," I say.

When a minute rolls around my questioner is starting to turn purple. They can't take it anymore and loudly exhale and begin gulping air, to which I respond, "That need."

For me, my passion for the outdoors and for hunting stems from a need that is hardwired into my soul, so basic that the only thing I can possibly compair it to is the need to breathe.
