Fighting Lyme Disease early....

I wasn't sure where to put this but know most everyone on this forum stops by here on occasion.

Last Sunday night my son Marc developed a little sore on his back where he couldn't see it. He had someone check it and they found a little bug burrowed into the skin. Marc went immediately to a local medical facility where the facility operator confirmed the bug was a tick. She removed it and discarded it. Marc asked if it should be sent away and checked for Lyme disease. He was told: " We don't do that anymore. Instead we prescribe a pill which if taken within 30 days of the ticks attachment will prevent Lyme disease." She estimated the tick had been present about 36 hours.

Needless to say Marc took the prescription to the druggist the next day and had it filled and took the two pills. Cost of the pills was $3.00.

Cheap insurance IMO.

I put this out there to alert you to get prompt medical help if you suspect you have been exposed to a tick. Better safe than sorry.

The name of the medication is DOXYCYCLINE HYCLATE 100 MG CAP

These guys are right. I am living with Lyme and a Bartonella Co-infection as we speak. The best thing you can do for your son is to seek out your closest Lyme Literate Physician and set a plan in place.

Your son's quality of life will depend on how you handle this right now!!!!!!!!!!! I promise you that 99.9% of the medical attention you seek won't know what to do after a couple rounds of Doxycycline and your son will be SOL. These infections are growing at endemic proportions around this country and being dismissed as a multitude of ailments, of which one is Fibromyalgia. The diagnosis of undiagnosis.......not good.

Take care of your son.

You folks that said the med. doesn't always work may be correct.

Marc went to the Emergency room yesterday with a very painful knee. The ER doctor checked him over and said he believed Marc may have some ligament damage. He was referred to an orthopedic center. At his appointment this morning the doctor there felt around the sore area and asked Marc if he had had a tick bite recently. Marc told him yes. The doctor said he might have Lyme Disease.

They took blood samples etc. to determine if it in fact he does.

Now he is calling his primary doctor to see if the results from the tests can be hurried along. The Ortho. Dr. told him it may be as long as two weeks before they get the results back. We are not going to settle for that.

I'll keep you posted.

Lynn,

I can't stress enough that you need to find a Lyme Literate Physician. A General Prac will not treat your son aggressively enough and the rest of your son's life hangs in the balance. While this may sound a little dramatic, I assure you it is the truth!

Oh and the results of the testing doesn't mean squat. Testing is unreliable and irrelevant. True Lyme and it's associated co-infections are based on clinical diagnosis. A Western Blot or ELISA test are two tests that a Lyme Doc will use to aid him/her in their diagnosis. I am not aware of any other tests that are worth their weight in salt.

Please get your son a Lyme Literate Doc.....

We're waiting for a call back from the doctor tomorrow. We will discuss this with him. I have a friend battling Lyme disease right now. I am going to call him tomorrow. I couldn't reach him today and he works nights. I left him a message. I believe he is seeing a specialist.

As you can see by the link I posted, Long Island NY (where I used to live) seems to be at the epicenter of the emerging Lyme Disease epidemic. There has been a fairly high level of awareness for some time. When I first joined the FD down there, about 10 years ago, we did a lot of training in a State Park that is just overrun with deer and of course no hunting season. Needless to say the deer tick and Lyme Disease occurrence was quite high. Many of my friends have been diagnosed with it. Some have done just fine with minimal treatment, others have ongoing effects......BUT...... I must be the luckiest guy in the world when it comes to Tick bites (Actually insect bites in general) I've found a few on me over the years, but as far as I can tell I've never been bitten. (If you remember from the Poison Ivy post, I'm not really allergic to that either!)

I hope your son does well LETEMGROW.
