Great weekend in the woods

Absolutely one if my best weekends of hunting ever. Friday morning I rattled in 3 bucks an saw 5 total including my top deer. Unfortunately for me I misjudged the yardage and shot underneath him! Thankfully he didn't know what happened and drifted off. That night I rattled in two more and saw a total of 21 deer that day. Saturday morning was the duck opener and I had my limit at 830 an d Hemi retrieved beautifully. Saturday night again was great and I passed a low 140's main frame 8(goalpost) trailing a doe. He's just 3.5. Sunday morning Splitter made another appearance from the same spot just no shot. Sunday night yielded Grumpy, my over the hill non-typical and dad saw the wide 8. Unreal action and this weekend should be even better!

sounds like your ground is looking pretty good Pat. This a lease back home or in Kansas. This on all the same property? No shot opportunity on Grumpy? assume that's why you didn't take him... curious how big is this ground and what are the neighbors like? Sorry for so many questions. My gears are just turning in my head.

Sounds like a great weekend.

Slow here in the way of daytime deer movement, deer were on their feet early Saturday morning, heard them moving around on my way to my stand and heard a few after I got in the stand, they seemed to be out of our area before it was light. Saw a few Saturday afternoon and had a few shot opportunities. Should get better in the next few weeks, youth hunt here is this coming weekend and the weather is supposed to change for the better Friday late with a break from the forecast 80's all this week and highs Saturday only around 60.

Great weekend in the woods

DB

Home property that consists of 178 acres total. The neighbors will all kill goalpost in a heartbeat. He's actually on the hitlist for my dad and other buddy. I just know if I kill him he's 100% dead. Good chance he gets shot being this dumb but its a chance ill take. I'm really trying to kill older bucks and he just doesn't meet that criteria for me right now at 3.5 and 140 inches. If he were 160 the story has a different ending. Grumpy did not present a shot. He is smaller than goalpost but his age makes him a true trophy.

Right now I have some very respectable deer on the wall. Goalpost would have been my 3rd biggest buck, but not big enough for me to ignore his age. Managing deer has a ton of unknowns on such a small parcel, but my goals are 4.5+ right now unless its my biggest buck.

I've been seeing a ton of deer this season, way more than usual. They've all been doe though. I took a nice sized doe last Wednesday. But I haven't seen a buck. I'm not too worried, this is the low period for buck activity in my area and things should start picking up.

Cool to hear rattling is working for you. I'm going to start that this week.

Thanks for the info. I completely follow you with your decisions and small tract of land. my parent's farm is just over 350+ acres but lots of open fields that make it hunt like a property that's a lot less. We're not at that caliber of deer though by far. Only thing i've gotten the neighbors to do is not shoot spike horns, but many basket 1.5 and 2.5 yr olds get taken. I've got to hunt for something starting at 3.5 yr old, even then i get rare opportunities there. Good luck and hope you get a repeat of that weekend.

Same in northeast MO Friday. Saw the 4.5 year old 9 I passed earlier and one of the big mature bucks I wanted...just too far away. Saw 24 deer (5 rack bucks) Friday afternoon. My buddy lost count on how many he saw Friday afternoon. 3 of the bucks he saw were shooters, including the 5x6 he's been after & he shot right over one big 8. Slowed down a bit Saturday though when the wind shifted out of the east & started warming up. I didn't see any mature bucks Saturday but my buddy saw one mature 10 point...too far for a shot though. From the way the bucks acted that we saw...things should break wide open real soon, especially now that it's cooled off again.
