WStreblo
DIY or Outfitter Depends on if you can hunt a good piece of land on your own.... If you can get into a good place where you don't have a lot of pressure DIY
pointing_dogs_rule
DIY... just becuase I like the challenge and the satisfaction from self research and work. If you WANT an elk and care less of anything else then an outfitter. There is a compromise.... have an outfitter drop you way back in to and area that you would like to hunt. good luck to all the dog

elkoholic
DIY if you are prepared to do the research to find a promising area (keep in mind that last years info may not help in the current year) and have the equipment along with the know-how to pull off such a hunt. Keeping in mind that if successful, you need to have the ability to deal with an animal of that size. Personally, I would recommend having an outfitter set you up with a drop camp. You get the best of both worlds. The outfitter will pack you into and out of camp (they usually provide tents and basic gear) and you do the hunting on your on. They may have different options as to what they provide and will check on you regularly to pack out any game harvested. As an example, years ago I used A Lazy H outfitters (Montana Wilderness hunts for elk and mule deer | A Lazy H) for a pack-in hunt (6 hours on a horse and you might not want to be afraid of heights) to hunt the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The cost was around $1600.00, and we started our hunt with archery gear before the early rifle season and had the place to ourselves until the early rifle season opened. Unless you, or someone you know, owns horses and the needed gear it is not practical to consider this type of hunt. On the other hand there are many areas where you can just camp and hike in to some great hunting as long you are prepared for the mountains and getting your trophy bull out. The important thing is, just do it!
