I know it's about time to start doe bleats, grunting, rattling and wheezing and I have all of the equipment to do it with but in not sure what to do when or how many times or what kind of grunts to use. What does the master bow hunters use lol It don't matter if it brings in a doe or buck. I'm just trying to get some meat on the table. I havnt shot anything yet this year and its time. I know there is deer here cause I see quite a few just not at the stand I'm hunting at the time. Tonight I'm sitting in a stand I shot 3 out of last year so I know there's deer around here somewhere.

I noticed that the guys on T.V. will typically use a call of some sort when they see a deer that is out of range and does not look like it will come any closer. I haven't used a ton of calls myself, but I recently started experimenting. I did some blind rattling with some grunts thrown in every 45 mins or so with no success, but that could be because there was nothing within earshot. The best way to find out what works is to use different tactics. Trial and error my friend.

Rattling around here is almost pointless with the buck to doe ratio. Almost every deer around here that wants to breed gets the chance due to nobody killing does and bucks with poor genes. With that being said, once I notice pre rut activity and bucks out solo I will start throwing some calls out there. I won't use doe estrus until I know for sure they are rutting but I will use buck urine on a drag... If your going to talk the talk well you might as well smell like it too. I will throw a few grunts out ( short and long ) about twice an hour. Once the rut is in I will throw in doe bleats and mix in some different grunts. The snort wheeze works well with a dominant buck (use only after grunting him in has failed) but be ready cause he's coming in ready to fight. If he's been whooped on, 99% of the time he's gonna bolt once you wheeze him. I practiced grunting a lot at smaller bucks and watched their reactions and there is no better education you can get than from a deer... If you don't do it right he will definitely let you know.

I haven't used any doe bleats yet, but I rattled in a little 5 pt yesterday morning and got him acting tough. He rubbed and scraped on everything within reach for 100 yards. Was skunked in the same stand for the afternoon. Did talk to neighbor and he watched 3 big bucks in his pasture fight for over 10minutes. He said they ended up attracting what he called "A GD Giant" when he walked out. The other 3 took off. I was disappointed in my sit and left maybe 5 minutes early and ended up seeing a 140-145" cruising a fence line between some thick timber and the Mennonites milo field. It's a brisk 29 this morning. About to get ready and head back out. Taking the decoy with me this morning. I'll be rattling and grunting most of the time.

I'm no expert, never have rattled a deer in in my ten or so attempts. But as far as calling I do think less is better. I only call during the rut, I have cold called deer in, grunting and bleating every 30 minutes or so on the stand. There's no magic formula, we've all looked at deer and called to them just to have them pick their heads up to look at you them go back to what they were doing. Same thing happens with deer you can't see. But when everything is right they come in on a string.
