WStreblo
Hunting here in Ohio even in all this rain. I smashed a good buck hot on a doe tonight but as soon as my arrow hit the buck it changed its angle and instead of the downward angle into his opposite shoulder it went flat as if I shot him from the ground and angled back toward his opposite hip... Kind of high and bit back. Deer bolted out of there and went 60 yds before I lost sight of him but heard a crash. Didn't find blood until I was right where I last seen him. It was dark and I backed out... Feel ok about the shot then I start to second guess myself.... The blood trail was bright blood quickly getting washed away due to rain and it was big drops and with as fast as he was running I'd say there would have been the red carpet had he been moving slower. kman43
You did the right thing because the shot was kind of high and a bit back. The rain won't help with the tracking but if you hit liver and he hasn't expired then you risk pushing him. He should be near where you last heard him unless the coyotes or something pushes him. Ravin R10 man
Not quite following the description of arrow flight, or if you were describing the bucks actions...sounds like a liver shot he should be just beyond where you backed off
kman43
How did you do WS? Did you find your buck?
WStreblo
advice needed Found my arrow bent up and a big pile of hair but not a sign of him... I think he might have got bumped up last night. Coyotes have always been in population down on that chunk of ground. I'm sick about it
WStreblo
advice needed Matthews XT.... I guess my description can be confusing. I had a slight quartering away shot. I drew the line from his opposite shoulder put my pin on him and let it fly. When the arrow hit his left ribs, instead of that arrow staying on its downward angle (45deg) it lost that downward angle to seem as if I hit him from the ground (0deg). Not only did the angle change but the entire direction of the arrow changed. Instead of continuing into the opposite shoulder the arrow had a slight angle toward his opposite hip. How this happened I have no dag gum clue.
kman43
It's the most helpless feeling. Sorry about that!
Ravin R10 man
Arrow had to have hit bone to change like that..a rib would not have done that..Im thinking you hit farther back and got hip bone.. if it was shoulder bone, the arrow should have glanced the other way too bad you lost him..thats weird
hoosierhunter
advice needed It sounds like your shooting an expandable and one blade deployed early. It's something people rarely talk about but happens with quartering shots. If the arrow turned that quickly it's probably pure guts and now I'd be hoping for an expandable wound. The deer is dead you just have to find him now. He can't survive opening up his guts inside him the way you did. He should have tried to get to water and if its a pure guts hit he will get there regardless of the distance he has to go. The deer is dehydrating from blood and water loss and he will feel the need to drink quite often.
pointing_dogs_rule
Did you look where you "heard" him crash??? good luck to all the dog
Turkeygirl
Go back and start circling the area....this is why I don't hunt in the rain...drizzle is ok, actual rain I won't hunt because I don't want to risk losing a deer, even on a good shot!
