tedicast
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 I would buy a new Enore, and send it out to David White for one of his custom barrel stubs. Not sure which calliber, probably one of the AI's. I would have enough of the $2500 left over to buy the stuff I need to get into the reloading end of the game. Here is a link to one of his customs. David White Encore . I would definately want a little milder stock than the one in the pictures.
JimT
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 I would buy two rifles and a shotgun. A Remington 7600 .308 with a Leupold VariX-III 2x8 and a Remington LSS Mountain rifle in .260 Remington topped with a Weaver V9. The shotgun would be an 870 Wingmaster Dale Earnhardt tribute 12 guage. All that would be just so nice to have....

AJ
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 [ QUOTE ] Man thats not your ideal 'elk rig' is it? a .308? [/ QUOTE ] Actually, with that setup, it is. I can kill anything with a .308 Winchester that can be killed with the 300 Wby. It will be very lightweight, and easy to carry. It will be more than accurate enough to shoot to 500 yards. And the best part, the recoil won't be teeth chattering. I had the magnumitis for a while, but I have learned enough since then to realize that a standard cartridge will work just fine. Its all about bullet placement. Its all about carrying the gun. We carry the gun 99.9% of the time and shoot it .1% of the time. The older you get, the steeper the mountains get. Anything that makes it easier to get to the elk is an asset.

Guest J_Owens_66
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 AJ hit it on the head, a .308 will drop a Elk just like a .300 Wtby Mag will without all the recoil, short ation making it lighter and shorter. Shot placement is crucial with any rifle, and any cartridge.
JJL
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 I'll take $500 and get myself a new Savage..probably a 16bss in 300rum. I'll strip the glass off my 7mm and have $2000 in my pocket. AJ
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 Nobody can argue that the magnums have more velocity, energy, recoil, etc., than the .308 Winchester. When you look at what is needed to get the job done, it really does not matter. As long as the cartridge has enough velocity to keep a decent level of energy, it will kill the animal just as dead as a cartridge with X times more power. A .308 Winchester with a 165 gr bullet is enough to kill an elk at 400 yards. Most people can not shoot accurately at that distance or farther anyhow. I agree that shot placement should not be an issue, but you would be amazed at how many people read these posts and think that a "magnum" will kill them just out of velocity, or give you more room for error since the bullet is going faster or is larger. I am not knocking the 300 Wby. I have a gun chambered for it and it is my baby. It was my pick of my litter when I went elk hunting.
AJ
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 Actually the experts say 1000 ft lbs for deer and 1500 for elk. I drop the deer level to 800 ft lbs. Yes elk are large and tough but you put a bullet through the lungs and its going to die. How many elk have been dropped by handgun hunters with revolvers? How many elk have been dropped by black powder setups? While elk are big and tough, they are not cape buffalo. A broadside shot is easy for the .308 Win. I would not even hesitate to take a 400 yard broadside shot at a bull that I wanted (unless the wind was blowing too hard). At that distance the .308 can still deliver 1500 ft lbs of energy. That's a dead elk. It may run a hundred yards or so but its dead.
Guest lilcrackshot
Re: What to buy with $2500.00 I would by a Tikka T3 Stainless with laminate stock in the 338 Win. Mag.
