Lance_M
Anybody on here duck hunt in Oklahoma? Just curious to if you were seeing any migratory birds yet and which part of the state you were in. I hunted this weekend out near Ft Gibson lake and saw (not decoyed) maybe 100 ducks total (which I consider low).

Jeramie
Im from the NE corner of FT Gibson lake (Locust Grove). We need cold to see more ducks. I did see about 30 or so Gadwall on our ponds this weekend. Saturday morning I was hunting with a smoke pole and saw several groups of 2-3 fly over but nothing too exciting. I think the drout and the heat are hurting early season. One pond in general I hammer the mallard on is down several feet. Im not sure how its going to work out for season now.... I just know we need cold, we need rain.
Lance_M
Oklahoma Waterfowlers... Yeah, I know we could use rain. I've got a lot of ponds I usually hunt, that are either almost bone dry, or much smaller due to lack of water. Needless to say, ducks aren't on them like usual. My buddy and I decided to give the spend the next couple weeks back in the woods with our bows and wait a while to get back in the duck blinds. Jeramie
I hope the second split works out much better. A few of our ponds are spring fed and still up but my favorite mallard pond is way down. I'm sure I will still do fine this year but I really want to see some moisture... If I had to I could hit the lakes but I have much better luck on our ponds...
ckrich
We had one good flight of about 30 birds come in right at first light, and worked outside of the decoys. Got a chance and reworking them after a bit and pulled a few down. Saw small groups(2-4 birds) and singles after that, and we ended up taking 12 for the morning. Not seeing big numbers move, and we definitely need a big cold front to push them down. I've just about given up on hoping for rain. Oh, and Jeramie.... I hunted all morning with one of my own calls! It still needs a little back pressure work before you get one tho.
Jeramie
Get it done man.... I need one around my neck...
Lance_M
Well had a chance to go out again this morning near Chelsea, shot a 2-man. Definitely seeing more ducks but still not a lot of migratory birds. Had one group of about 6 green heads bust us while we were picking up ducks. Other than that, just saw teal, gadwall, ringnecks, and wigeon. Oh and we saw a rabbit too! Ha.
Jeramie
At least youre seeing something.. i didnnt expect anything to be in the area. Im bow hunting on Sunday before Church. Ill be checking the ponds on my way out. We have a cold front coming in on Monday. Hopefully it will truly get cold and stay that way. Jeramie
I wanted to chase deer yesterday but WAY too windy. We had gust pushing 50 MPH. So I went and sat on a pond. I saw around 50 - 60 ducks from daylight to 7:30. I only had a shot on 3 (two different groups). Missed the first single all together and then my gun jammed on the second too. I was amazed the birds were out but they were there.... The one I missed may have been a pintail. It came through like a dart, cupped, and was gone in seconds after the shot. It did fly directly overhead and from the profile im guessing it was a pintail. It would be odd however as it would be the very first pintail I have ever seen on our ranch in over 30-years. ckrich
I didn't get to go this weekend, and I'm still not seeing many birds or any movement to speak of. It sounds like there are birds farther west. My cousin and his buddies took 16 on Saturday moning near Piedmont, mostly widgeon with a gaddy and one lonely pintail. Lance_M
Oklahoma Waterfowlers... Jeramie, where's your ranch at? That cold front pushed a ton of birds down. On Tuesday morning, we shot a 4-man limit in 40 minutes. Birds included, gadwall, wigeon, mallards, and even a lone pintail.
Jeramie
We are just east of Locust Grove. I live in LG so the ranch is about a 15 minute drive. I was out deer hunting Saturday and saw a TON of ducks. Killed a buck so its time to turn on the bird season. Im going to try to get out either tomorrow or wednesday and then a few times this weekend.
