Jeramie
So anymore if you see a buck around our ranch over 100" its a good buck. We used to see large bucks every year but the people that bought land around us kill anything that moves. If it has any bone in its head its a target. Yesterday i went out before Church for the last day of smokepole season. I hunted until about 1.5 hours after daylight and heard a shot on part of the ranch people shouldn’t be on so I headed that direction to run people off. On my way I stopped at a little batch of timber that I have seen deer in before. I’m gunning for anything young to make summer sausage and other treats out of. I looked down a clearing to see a deer scratching its neck with its hind leg. I could tell it was a buck but couldn’t tell how big. Cows were moving around behind me so he ignored me. After he scratched he lifted his head. He probably isn’t the largest buck anyone has seen but he was probably mid 130's to 140" typical. Dark chocolate rack... beautiful. I was about 125 yards away and didn’t have much of a shot. He walked away and turned in behind a few trees. most of his body was still showing. I contemplated taking the shot which was about 100 yards now but he was just a little too far behind the trees. I could only hit the back part of the lungs. If I were off a little it would have been a gut shot so I let him start walking. I tried to stop him at that point but he jogged out to about 130 yards, still not a great shot. I pushed toward him with trees as cover. He kept moving away and I finally got him to stop one more time. He had made it to about 150 yards out. I still thought about the shot but let him walk. He finally jogged away but it wasn’t a dead out run. He know something wasn’t right but he never bolted. This weekend I’m going to setup in that same area with my bow (bow only this weekend). The deer aren’t rutting here right now which is odd because they are rutting all over the place. He wasn’t showing any sign of the rut. I hit my grunt once and he ran from it. Im not sure if he is using this area as a travel route or if he is hanging out here. I just hope I haven’t ruined it! So the question is now what? I’m setting out some tinks 69 on Saturday and using the can a little in hopes he is rutting to some degree but wasn’t showing sign. Other than that its going to be a sit and wait game.... redkneck
That sounds like a monster for my neck of the woods Jeramie, I'd be happy to see something like that, so far just seeing little basket racks. I'd do just as you're planning on, not sure when your rut is in full swing, but he's got to be getting ready for it pretty quick I'd say. Seeing lots of scrape activity right now here, but just early piddling around for them, full rut here is well over a month away.
dbHunterNY
yea it's got to be close even if he's not showing. i'd call very little even with the can though. just let him come into the tink's on his own unless you see him in the distance not heading toward ya. it doesn't sound like he'd be bothered enough to leave the area all together. if he wasn't rutted up much then chances are he wasn't just passing through, but who knows. Jeramie
Our rut typically starts late October to early Novemeber. By now they are swollen necked and DUMB. However, he didnt seem to be. When I hunted McAlester (2 hours south) about 2-weeks ago they were aready chasing. Odd they arent in my neck of the woods though. abrown
I haven't seen anything chasing, just harrassing. I've been having the same reaction where I hunt. There's a nice 9 pointer, I've grunted at him, but he won't have anything to do with me. I grunted Saturday morning mixed with a rattle pack, there he was, a bigger 8, came straight to me, but the dang deer feeder spook em when it went off. So note, one reason he's not responsive might be because there's more dominant buck, hopefully bigger! Here in north central OK, it's usually the second week in November when the rut is hitting. Jeramie
Im headed to walmart on Thursday for tinks and we will see how it works out. Typically by now ive seen some major action so im still slack jawed at why he didnt respond. But again, its hot... too hot. I know the moon has a lot to do with it too but the cold sure seems to help. We need a winter instead of this 75 deg day stuff... Its NOVEMBER! Sheesh... abrown
I just had a friend get back from McAlester, he shot a heck of a 9 pointer. He said he came into a snort wheeze, so I'm thinking their starting pre-rut!
