here's the update: all started well with a beautiful morning with a nice bull in the spotting scope. but, i thought we could do bigger & better. it was either a large 5 point or a small 6, just too early to really tell. anyway, we elected to go on. while enroute to my high pont lookout spot, the boys dad had to make a pit stip. so, i pulled up to a bush he could go behind. about 10 minutes later, a truck pulls up behind me and dad's business was not finished, so i pulled over and let a truck go ahead. he was about 3 minutes ahead as we got close to my lookout point when "bang".... down went a big 6 point bull. if only i were 3 minutes earlier... lol.

it was a 62 degree day with 35 mph winds, crummy for hunting. we literally saw nothing until 3pm. it's really frustrating to go to all your good spots and find nothing. normally, i get to hunt alone 1st day but this time the rancher had other hunters. no real problem on a big property, but it did bite me a few times.

finally, later afternoon we saw some cows, followed by more and some small bulls. as we looked around, we were alone and surrounded with elk. as i slowly drove 2 miles west, we saw a dozen small herds with lots of good bulls. at the far west end of the ridge we spotted a skyline bull, and a nice one. then, another appeared. then, another. it was a 500 yard shot which is more than the kid could handle (and a skyline shot to boot) so we just watched. as the elk wandered undisturbed over the hill, the boy and friend wanted out to go look for them. i said fine, and that i'd go around the mountain to make sure they were not heading out. so, the 2 started climbing about 500 yards and 500' up the hill and i drove around with 2 others, his brother & step dad. of course, what we all expected happened. there were the elk (two 6 x 6 perfect bulls and three 6 x 6 bulls with broke off horns) looking at us at 300 yards. a perfect shot except the only hunter was on the other side of the ridge. lol. so, i got out and waved a them and talked with them. i even said to go back over the hill so we could kill you. and they did. they slowly walked back over the hill and 10 seconds later bang. and bang. (i tell every hunter to keep shooting until the elk is down. i don't care how good the 1st shot is, keep hitting him.) then the whooping and hollering. we drove back around in 10 minutes and there was one happy kid. he did shoot a bull who had broken horns, not even realizing what he was doing. the shot was 60 yards and he whacked him good the 1st time (double lung) then remembered what i'd said and shot again. second shot the bull folded. it was a 6 x 6, but lost one point on the right and 2 on the left. it's the largest bodied bull i ever put in my truck, 1000 lbs easily. the 5 of us could not lift it into the truck, so i had to cut it in half. what a bull. it's a good thing i was able to back the truck within 100 yards of him, all steeply downhill. i was flat worn out. today i'm napping and catching up. i must be getting old or something...

and chris, seems i remember offering you a hunt years ago. we can still get it done.

and, last, a big thanks to corey for doing an excellent job of posting for me.
