Maine Hntr
So i took this past friday off as well as monday, friday i grunted a small 5-6 pointer directly in to my tree, literally had a 5 yard shot for 20 minutes and opted not to shoot because it was 6 AM and the rut is on and i'm hoping for better. At 8:40 AM i had another small buck come in, 4 pointer and he circled behind me 15 yards or so never offering a great shot. Tonight I had a button buck stroll through on a natural run followed 5 minutes later by a doe, both passed in front of me broadside at 10 yards. I have only harvested 4 deer in my hunting career, all of which were either spikes or 4 pointers... while it killed me to let the small bucks yesterday pass and the 90lb doe today i just would like to wait for something bigger especially where i've found some real nice rubs close by. I just wish the big guy would come by soon because these smaller ones are starting to become tempting!
pointing_dogs_rule
If you have only one license... there is a saying. "YOU CANN'T SHOOT A BIG ONE IF YOU SHOOT A SMALL ONE FIRST". In my old age I shoot whatever makes me happy. good luck to all the dog

I think if I see one of the small bucks tomorrow I'm shooting, as for the button buck he's getting a free pass this year!
pointing_dogs_rule
Then I agree. Take a smaller one then wait for the big boy. I always like to shoot a doe first so that I can get meat and my confidience level up (knowing that I can make the shot). This really helps me when the big one comes by. good luck to all the dog
wtnhunt
Only way I could see it meing a mistake would be if you have regrets. Sounds like a good spot. Might not get to see what else might be coming along if you shoot the first deer you see. Of course sometimes the first one you see could be just the right one. mike13candace
I have passed on many. First day, bigger bucks in area, exc.. Regretted it a few times. No easy decision. New to this sport you get better with the shot placement only with taking a shot. If you want to let him pass. Pick up your bow as if you were going to shoot. Helps with all the steps of making a good shot.
Maine Hntr
I'm regretting it a little right now but still a lot of season left and I also know the area is not all that pressured so assuming they stick around, the coming years have some potential! WW179
Making a mistake? Don't pass up a buck on the first day that you would be happy to shoot on the last day. Although it sounds like you did the right thing let the little guys walk its fun to just watch and experiment some times. Try grunting/snort weeze/doe bleat at the when they turn their head. Watch their reaction never know what you might call in with a live decoy in front of you. Good luck whatever you decide!!
