MUDRUNNER
I got a call from the wife this morning that the Suburban was acting up. I went to pick her up and we swapped vehicles so I could try and limp it home. For some reason out of the blue, the thing decides it doesn't have a third gear. First and second work fine, when it goes into third there is nothing. It just revs, but no go, just like I threw it into neutral. I was hoping it would just be a solenoid, but every place I've called has said clutches are probably shot. I've never had tranny go out all of the sudden like that, but from the way it sounds it is pretty common on the 4L60E trans. Best price so far is $1600. Still seems high, but not much I can do about it.
soillap
My brother has an 05 and has had 2 go out on him in under 100k miles. Very common problem with them.
Shaun_300
Yep I do transmissions at a GM dealer, that's a common with the 4L60E transmissions. 3/4 clutches burn out. I'd opt for a GM SRTA transmission that comes with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a while. The price you got sounds pretty reasonable if that's for a GM SRTA trans. Then tack labor on top of that.
MUDRUNNER
Picked it up yesterday. It ended up costing us right at $2000 out the door. I brought it to a tranny shop that a few other people I know have used. They rebuilt the trans, new torque converter and electronics, put new output seals and fluid in the transfer case, and did a few upgrades for towing. We got a two year 24,000 mile warranty on it. Mine is an '05 too Soillap. It sounds like we're lucky we got 110,000 miles out of it. We bought it from my father in law, and he did a lot of towing with his camper. Shaun_300
Glad you got it fixed up. That's a really good price, especially with a new torque converter. There are some good upgrades that beef up the 4L60. Stronger reaction sun shell, Corvette servo, stronger forward sprag, Trans-Go shift kits which changes some springs in the valve body and accumulators, increasing oil passage sizes in the spacer plate, etc.

It sure doesn't seem like a good price, but compared to a few other places I got quotes from I guess it's not bad. I remember when I could get a C6 or turbo 350 built with all the goodies for under $400.

Yup, I remember when you could go to the movies for a quarter, hot dogs were a dime, hamburgs were fifteen cents and a whole loaf of bread was fifteen cents. Home heating fuel was 15.9 cents a gallon and gas was 24.9 cents a gallon. You could buy a brand new car for less than $2000. WELCOME to 2012!
