A couple of years ago I bought a golden to start hunting ducks with under the rouse that it was for our eldest’s birthday.

She turned 2 back in July but isn’t much of a duck dog. She is really sweet, roughly 65lbs, and has a great attitude. She, however isn’t aggressive at all with ducks. She isn’t crazy about water, etc. I’ve taken her several times but she has never cared about being out there..makes me sick! She is even registered...

My cousin and her husband moved back down from the NE after living there for a while. He is military and she has some 4 year degree. After moving down they both got new jobs in the NE again... when they left they left their two dogs on the ranch. One is a chocolate lab 4-5 years old (guessing). I was out duck hunting this past weekend. When she heard me shooting she bolted down the hill to the pond and bailed off in the water to retrieve the duck. She brought it to me, soft mouthed and everything. I shot on more ducks and she bailed off in the water but I had missed. Given that I tied bailing twine on her collar and held her back for the next round of ducks. They came in fast and I smoked one. She liked to drug me in the water. I finally cut her loose and she brought the duck back again..

She hasn’t been hunted, its natural. She needs serious work but her retrieval instinct is incredible. Sad... she is actually has horrible conformation, she is small, but she is an incredible retriever.

So now I have a problem. I want to bring her home and start using her. My wife wants me to get rid of our golden first because it would put us with 4- dogs (Old Schnauzer, Corgi, Golden, and Chocolate Lab).

Why couldn’t the golden just be a good duck dog so I wouldn’t have issue... :D
