wtnhunt
Seems to be a real hot item for Christmas this year, on our list too, but with so many options really not sure what to buy, which OS, ipod due to price is not an option. So, anyone got any insight/tips on what to look for, what to avoid? Kids can use them in school now, wow when I was a kid calculators were not even allowed. Considering the blackberry playbook, unfortunately missed a great deal on one, but dunno still trying to figure out just what to get. MUDRUNNER
I picked one up last year. I actually went in to buy the Kindle Fire, but got a Lenovo from Best Buy for the same price and more features. It's a 7", but works great for games, movies, and internet. I like the wi fi tablets, so you don't need a data plan for it. The Google Nexus is supposed to pretty good to. If you want to stay around $200 there are some pretty good 7 inchers out now. fly
William, I just bought my 11 year old daughter and Ipod (4th generation) - used on Craigslist for $110.00. It has a few scratches on the back, but with a case it looks brand new. I didn't get it for school though, it's more for music, games, pictures / videos, and to be able to text me (where she gets wi-fi). I have wi-fi at home, but don't have a home phone any more. This way I can leave her at home this summer (she'll be 12) and I can run to the store and leave her home. If there is a problem she can text me. I'm sure it could be used for school work as well - but the screen is not very big so if reading a book is what you want I'd go with something larger. Take a look - Craigslist has a ton of Ipod 4th generations around a 100.00 (at least in St. Louis). I'd be glad to get one for you and mail it to you if you have trouble finding one in your area. Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
I ordered a couple 7 inch Samsung galaxy tab 2 tablets. Best buy has them for $179 right now. I actually ordered one for myself, but decided to give it away for Christmas, then ordered another one. Not sure if I am keeping it or giving it away though. I haven't messed around with one yet, but the reviews have been pretty good. Have an aunt who has the 1st gen. of it an she likes it. They run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Jeramie
I bought the Kindle Fire and even though we have a laptop we use the fire WAY more. Best buy has the original fire on sale for $150 right now. The Kindle Fire HD is $200.00. The Fire HD has the built in camera and a few things more like the IPAD. Fire runs on the Android platform. I actually picked it because of the size. I spend time in airports because of work and wanted something small enough to fit in my bag, not something I needed a bag for. If you have a Wifi connections they are SWEET. I use it for books, movies, games, etc. I downloaded a few games for my girls too (where's my water, preschool games, etc.). They use it for those games, Pandora, etc. My wife uses it quite a bit when cooking to look up recipees on the net. Its easier to move around with than a latptop and well worth the money. Amazon has a product called Amazon Prime. Its $79 a year and you can watch over 400 pages of movies (about 5 movies per page) for that price. It also has tons of tv shows, full seasons, etc. With that you get one free book a month (digital copy) and you get free two day shipping from Amazon. You can also watch the movies and tv on a laptop or smartphone if you dont want to use the Kindle... Very happy overall with Amazon and the Kindle Fire. wtnhunt
Samsung and Lenovo are two of the top considerations at this point, wife is supposed to be able to get a 30% discount on lenovo products through her work somehow. Really wanting to keep around $150 or less, but would not rule out the samsung at $179. Another one I was looking at the 64 gb blackberry playbook was $149 at office depot, but they are soldout. Will have to do some checking on the kindles too, Christina has mentioned them a few times.
Shaun_300
My girlfriends mom has a Blackberry tablet and she really likes it, paid the extra to get the keyboard which is nice to have.
MUDRUNNER
We really have no complaints with the Lenovo. It has front and rear camera's, and expandable memory. I don't remember what the built in memory was, but it is pretty decent. It does not come with a manual, which is a little strange, but we printed one off on line. It's pretty tough too. The kids have dropped it numerous times and it still works fine. It's basically just like an oversized smart phone. 30% off is a good deal. Maine Hntr
My wife has the kindle fire and has loved it, the new one is out now too and i've seen that in use as well and it's definitely worth the $$.
The_Kat
Aren't tablets essentially just bigger cell phones without calling abilties? I'm not trying to give a negative opinion on them at all here.....just curious if I'm missing something with them. It's just like my samsung galaxy but a bit bigger. Seems some are using them like a laptop.

The_Kat
I guess I need to check em out. I have my macbook pro laptop that I use all the time, and I'm just not sure that I'd use a tablet that much. You have given me something to do this week lol.....thanks! Jeramie
They are handy Kyle. I have three laptops (including my work laptop) and around the house I use the kindle fire far more for basic stuff. Its basically an android without the phone function. However, its much bigger than a phone. For watching videos, online email, etc. its very convenient. They basically stay in suspend mode so with a touch of a button you’re using is two seconds later. Also, with things like Pandora you can use the Wi-Fi and listen to music a lot. When we clean the house I plug it into one of my guitar amps auxiliary inputs and crank it up. Also, with the game aps my girls stay busy and I don’t have to worry about them accidentally getting on something they shouldn’t or making a call to Zimbabwe. Mine is also loaded with family pictures and books. It goes with me pretty much everywhere...
wtnhunt
Found another deal on the blackberry playbook for the 32 gb version for $169. Think at this point between that and the lenovo, just not sure on the bb operating system versus the android and what apps are available for a student. The lenovo is $149 and has 8 gb, has a micro sd port so it is expandable, has half the processor of the blackberry. Read a review on the lenovo that the screen was not so great. Still not sure, but got to get something the next day or two.
