Duramax Water Leak

Recommended Posts

While driving my "Low Coolant" light flashed, I immediately glanced at my temp. guage and noticed it was starting to climb. Pulled over and called for help. My mechanic from work came and brought some anti-freeze. Put a gallon in and could not find any leak. Decided to get out of the 70 mph traffic flying by us, so I cranked it up and got off the freeway and pulled into a station with good lights.

It ran fine. We started putting water in it and shortly after that the water came pouring out the back side of the engine it looked like it was near the top but couldn't tell for sure. It was not running at the time. It is an '06 Duramax. Left it parked, and went and got my trailer, cranked it up and loaded it on the trailer and took it home. Will hopefully get a chance to look at it early next week. Any thoughts?

Don't think so, as fast as it is coming out there would have to be a hole in the head. With the engine off, we put a gallon of water in it, and within about 10 seconds it was all on the ground. The information I am getting online makes it sound like there is an o-ring for the oil cooler right above the oil filter that goes out. I am taking it in tomorrow for our mechanic at work to take a look at it.

Usually if it's a head gasket on a Duramax it leaks internally and puts pressure into the cooling system but you never know. One time the diesel mechanic in our shop took the cap off the surge tank and it sounded like a shotgun going off there was so much pressure in the cooling system. I agree with Lynn it does sound like some sort of a seal or hose issue if it's leaking out that fast.

Check your warranty. Some of these had a 100,000 mi. powertrain warranty.

I think it may be out at 238,000 +/-

I hauled it into work this morning, but he won't look at it in depth until next week. Not real excited about it, yet. Really don't think it is a head gasket. It runs just fine, no smoke or steam out the pipe and the oil looks fine, also. I hear you about a lot of stuff in the way, we changed the glow plugs a couple months ago and found that taking the time to remove the inner fenders made the process a lot easier. Looks like we may have more the same this time.

Thanks for the replys. I will let you know what we find and what it takes.

Preliminary inspection shows a busted water line that connects to some type of radiator on the top right behind and under the alternator. The hose is only about 3 -4 inches long and about 3/4" diameter. Looks like a lot of pieces have to come off to get to it, though. Dismantling has begun.

Part is now off, hopefully it will go back together fairly easy.
