This year I've had more bucks showing up shot on camera than I ever remember.

The buck I shot, Wide 8, was shot head on in the neck with an arrow a week before I killed him.

Tips got his front leg literally blown off and then got finished off a week later.

Goalpost(135 3 yr old I passed) finally showed back up after 30 days. He was shot in the back ham with a slug, but thankfully it was so far back it entered and exited in the same ham. He isn't acting hurt though which is a big relief.

Another 3 yr old 8 has his front right leg swinging and a very low gut wound. He looks really bad I'm pretty sure he will die.

Grumpy gets hit by a car and dies.

My #1 protected buck, 125 inch 2 yr old, gets killed by a bow.

This is the downside to managing smaller properties as its very hard to protect the deer. The positive is that 3 bucks are still alive including two I passed(goalpost & B3). My fingers are crossed!!!

With the more hunting gets popular I'm noticing that more deer are getting just wounded. I think because more and more people are hunting who have no clue what the **** they are doing. Crazy dumb rednecks. I practice all year so when I shot it is dead not wounded. A lot of guys don't.

different caliber of deer i'm dealing with here but that's the idea. you have to go into managing a small property knowning that deer will be wounded or killed that you want to live. whether it's by the neighbors or someone with your property. heck we all have screwed up shooting at deer at some point. you passed two deer though and there's a good chance they'll make it through until next season. if you didn't pass on them you'd have only ONE single hopeful left. i know i'm preaching to the choir, but now you've tripled that number. Congrats!

I would venture to say that the "rednecks" do far more practicing throughout the year than the, well not so "rednecks". I can tell you from experience where we gun hunt, the neighbors who are what I call part-time, take it or leave hunters from the more urbanized areas pose the most threat to crippling deer. They have a kind of "oh well, another one will be by shortly, maybe I'll get that one" mentality. I have dispatched many, many deer of all sizes for various neighbors who enjoy shooting at deer.

The bottom line is that deer hunters are out in the woods for a multitude of reasons. Managing their deer herd is so far above their ability and desire that it can be hard for them to understand why many of us want to do it. They also seldom realize the benefits they reap from your hard work. But.....to each their own.

Currently our cameras are showing night time activity after the pressures of our gun season. My brother has 5 or 6 scrubs on this card pull on our family property. Myself and a buddy have a few 2 1/2s and a 3 1/2 that made it through since season on his family property. It is fun to start planning for next archery season because during this late season, I would be hard pressed to kill a buck now unless he really sparks my interest for some reason.

Yep the "urban" deer hunters are flat scary. They have not grown up around weapons and their lack of knowledge is almost like them not having a moral compass.

My biggest problem is that it seems my neighbors don't care about wounding deer.

Heck my one neighbor asked me to take his buddy's kid hunting. He said " don't worry he had his own rifle. He doesn't need to borrow one." He was actually surprised when I told him Rifles are illegal in Indiana.

Now that's a Bill Engvel here's your sign award winner!

At least you are getting pics of shooters and up and comers and knowing where they are ending up. Have had pics of just a few here this year that caught my interest, neither the deer my wife or I killed ever showed up on cameras. Can be really frustrating when you have one you set your goals on coming around somewhat regular just disappear to never be seen again.

Far as those not caring about wounding animals, we have that all around us, one of those things that irritates me.

Can't say we've had a wounded deer problem in MO or MS. I met one of our MO neighbor's sons the 2nd day of the MO gun season and had a 30 minute chat with him. Being one of the 4 neighbors we get along with well, we exchanged information. I warned him about a trophy 11 point buck I'd seen once while bowhunting that broke off 2 tines during the following week based on my trail cam pics. Here's a couple of those TC pics.

He told me about a 164" buck he killed last year and said he wouldn't shoot that broken up buck. He was looking for something big like his buck last year. The next evening we had a meeting with his father and another neighbor. That afternoon prior to the meeting, he shot that busted up buck. He jumped him while tracking him & was letting him lay overnight to look again in the morning. Probably worse for him was he had to look me in the face & tell me about it. At least he was honest when he told me he'd shot it. Oh well...that was one buck that sure had B&C potential for next year.

We've been waiting to close on an adjoining 435 ac. in MO. We close next Friday. The owners claimed they would only have family hunting it this year. Turns out they sold some hunts through an outfitter. 5 bucks were shot & 3 recovered. They said they didn't kill any big bucks & 0 does. I found one of the bucks they didn't recover. It was a 2.5 year old 8 point, pretty small that was hit in the ham. I guess that's the way it is for some when you're hunting a property for the last time.

turning into quite the spread you're buddy has out in Montana. Sounds like the son won't be screwing up like that too much though. If you get all over him about it he may do it again and just not tell ya. Sounds like you dealt with it well though and they'll continue to share info.

It seems to be getting worse every year. Too many people out there deciding they want to start hunting, going to walmart and buying a gun and ammo, and walking out in the woods and shooting at everything thats brown. I know of 3 different hunters that hunted on neighboring farms this year that were breaking several of KYs hunting regs. Should have called the game warden to be honest, but I have raised some cain about people in the past and at this point Im afraid to stir the pot much more or I may lose permission on the farm I hunt. It just stinks. 3 bucks shot and never recovered in the last 2 years on neighboring farms. The farm I hunt is over 500 acres, and its not even close to being big enough to protect and manage deer well.

I can understand, the farm behind us got leased to several amish guys a few years ago, I ended up finding 3 of the 7 deer they shot and lost on my side. One was a 1.5 yr old 8 pointer that had a lot of potential.

That was when I just decided to heck with it, unless I can control a "country mile" area I really have no control over what happens to a deer.

It is not just new hunters that are shooting everything they see around here. We have a problem with a few on neighboring farms who have been hunting a lot longer than I have who will not hesitate to shoot any buck they see. Makes it tough to see many make it through, yet I still pass a lot of bucks, some that people around here cannot believe that I pass up.

Ethan, you got my largest farm over doubled in size. I'd be in heaven with almost a square mile to manage.

Yeah really. We have 60 acres + a 35 acre farm next to us we have sole permission on, if we had a square mile to manage here I believe we could see trophy caliber deer.

80% or more is crop fields so it doesnt feel that big. What isnt crops is some of the thickest, nastiest timber you have ever seen. Great for deer, but hard to hunt.

I agree its not just new hunters, thats just what I have seen around where I hunt.

We definitely have some nice bucks, but they still roam off onto neighboring properties. I know were losing several bucks to the neighboring farms every year.

I saw a ton of young bucks this year even towards the end of our rifle season, so Im hoping most made it through. Im 99% sure that Mr. Droptine made it as well, I think he holed up in the big thick creek bottom on the back of the farm. Im still trying to figure out how to hunt that area, its so thick and so large with relatively no funnels, its just a tough tough nut to crack for me.

I think the statistics would support the idea that theres actually less hunters every year not more, and theres always gonna be people who will take just plain stupid shots. While I am now with you all on the idea of passing immature deer, I can still remember the time when I wasnt. I cant condemn a guy who shoots a scrub and is just proud as a peacock of it.........i would suggest theres probably quite a few in the archives here- along with wishes of congratulations.
