Back from Texas

I went to Texas this year with the intention of only going after a free range Hill deer and some pigs with my bow. I was hunting with Action Outdoors Adventures.

To make a long story short. After 3 hunts and 12 hours of sitting hunt number 4 was my time. 25yard shot. He went 20 yards after a double lung hit. 125gr Slicktrick Standard.

This finished things up for me a couple days early. I enjoyed that hunt so much I wanted to go and try for another one. The owner of Action Outdoors asked me if I still wanted an Oryx. I told him I did. He knew of a ranch with a permit I could hunt. I forgot all about hunting pigs to get this Oryx. Two days and eight hours of waiting and I finally got the Oryx. Was it worth it? Oh yes it most definitely was!!! First shot was further back than I would like. I took a 60 yard follow up shot and closed the deal. The animal went another 60 yards but no further. Slicktrick 125gr standards strike again.

You definately have a knack with that bow Leo, especially with the exotics. Congrats on the succesful hunt. Love the pictures ... :)

The landowner of the ranch was reluctant to let me bow hunt his place. Luckily the outfitter knows me well enough to get me permission to deer hunt there with a bow. I think I changed the landowners mind a little about bowhunters after my hunt.

These deer had been hunted hard with a rifle this season. They were very twitchy and nervous. I was seeing lots of very hair trigger wired does. Finally, I used some Code Blue estrous spray in the area. This helped calm the deer down considerably. Best last minute purchase I ever made on any hunt. It really did the trick!

Congrats on the sucessful hunts Leo.

Texas is the Sportsmans paradise IMO. The Oryx is something to treasure. The USFWS has banned the hunting of them(don't know the date that goes into effect, but it is soon) and you were quite lucky to get in under the wire. That is a magnificent animal which I hear the meat is sweeter than Axis Deer. Bowhunting is awesome. Congrats again.

USFWS has NOT banned hunting them. The difference now is that a permit is required to harvest one. I do indeed have the permit for this animal. Yes it's more of a hassle to hunt them now but it still can be done legally. The FOA lawsuit only succeeded in adding the permit requirement. This severely limited the number of small ranches that had them but larger ranches have permits and still hunt them.

Anti's 0 Leo 1 :)

If you want to hunt one. Call several ranches, ask about the permit and shop around. The anti's would like you to believe that hunting them is banned. It simply is not the truth.

Leo...Ill admit that I am not up to date on the African exotics in Texas. But about a year ago. I posted about the dama, addax gazzelle and the scimitar horned orynx and how the USFWS was in the midst of baning the hunting of those animals. As far as I knew, farm raised livestock was able to be killed whenever. But I do know that even farm raised deer can only be killed during deer season. I see that they tryed to ban the hunting of these animals and a permit is now needed to hunt one. Again...Leo I congratulate you. Like you said...Antis 0...Leo 1

There are reams of misinformation floating about on these animals.

Some more truth. There are hunting outfits in Africa that have hundreds of Scimitars roaming their lands. They absolutely will allow you to shoot one over there but you can not bring it back into the USA. Many other countries don't have the import of these animals blocked. It's primarily the USA. If you live in the USA. The only way you can legally hunt them is on a ranch with a permit.
