dbHunterNY
draw when it's in full strut facing away or behind a tree. use a large cutting diameter broadhead. get the bird in close 15 yards and under. shot placement is really important. practice shooting your bow while sitting or from the position you will shoot from. second caller helps or being able to use a mouth diaphragm helps. you can continue working the bird in with both hands on your bow or while you're at full draw. Ethan Givan
Use a large cutting diameter mechanical head. The fixed blade heads will zip right through the turkey, and alot times that bird will fly off which makes them extremely hard to find. I like using some type of strutting decoy, that really keeps their attention and you can get away with a little more movement. Place the decoys no more than 15 yards away. I have killed one turkey with a bow, and I shot another that got away ( that was the one that taught me a lesson about fixed blade heads). However, I have killed alot of turkeys with a gun, and alot of the same things apply regardless of the weapon you use. Setup your blind where birds naturally want to come to. Be willing to set in there for a while, I have killed more turkeys after 10 am than before. If you can see a bird has committed and is coming to you, dont call to him, that can cause them to hang up. Scout alot before season, know where the turkeys are roosting, where they like to go after flying down, and where they like to strut during the day. We only got the quota for the first phase of one wma so for only 1 or 2 hunts do i really need a decoy? Do you have to have a decoy to kill a turkey? No Does a decoy make it easier to get a turkey within bow range? Yes Its up to you.
bowhunter97
Alright what is a cheap good decoy i could get? And how much is it?
Ethan Givan
If you want a hen decoy I would go with the cheap foam ones they have at walmart. They are like 10-12 bucks I think. They are not the most realistic decoy on the market but they work. If you want a strutter decoy then I like the PrettyBoy but they are a little pricey. Carry-Lite® Pretty Boy Turkey Decoy Set | Bass Pro Shops A cheaper route is something like this- Cherokee Sports - Billy Bad Act II If your hunting on public land I would NOT use a gobbler decoy. I only use them on private land where I am the only one hunting. Even then, I use an old brown or black sock to pull down over the head of my PrettyBoy decoy when Im carrying it around. They are extremely realistic. Edited December 19, 2012 by Ethan Givan
bowhunter97
Why do you cover the head?
deer slayer
bow hunting turkeys You cover the head because you could get a arrow stuck in the decoy or worse you.
hoosierhunter
bow hunting turkeys Use a blind. No need to brush in. Turkeys don't mind them like deer. use a mechanical head Aim just above the back leg when strutting. Turn bow down to 60 lbs, pass thrus are a bad thing. Use hen and jake decoy within 10 yards of blind in case they hang up
