COEngineer
If you have never heard of the People's Republic of Boulder (CO), this is a perfect introduction (the vigil, not the poaching). Boulder residents mourn Mapleton elk at candlelight vigil - Boulder Daily Camera I hope the cops get fined and fired. I also hope everyone can have a good laugh at the crazy liberals. wtnhunt
Guess I am missing something here. Why are the cops being labeled "poachers"? Investigation is pending, got to be more to this story as to why the on duty officer put the animal down than what this article eludes to. Wonder how those who loved the bull would feel if there was a collision where maybe their neighbor, friend, or even their own children were in an accident as a result of the elk being in the road? COEngineer
wtnhunt, there are lots of links to more articles on that page if you are interested in more details. From what I can figure out, the on-duty cop shot the elk in someone's back yard, the off-duty officer took it home for processing and neither filed a report or called the Dept of Parks and Wildlife. It's hard to come up with a logical explanation other than poaching.
MCH
I don't think it would be that hard to come up with an explanation... Cops called to house about animal disturbance. During investigation animal became aggravated and charged officer. Dead animal.
COEngineer
"Cops called to house about animal disturbance. During investigation animal became aggravated and charged officer. Dead animal." Yea, that would make sense...but why didn't they file a report? Or call Dept of Parks & Wildlife? You can't tell me they didn't know they should file a report about discharging their service weapon. And one of them runs a taxidermy, so there's no way he doesn't know what poaching is. Off-duty Boulder officer in elk shooting had called in sick, operates taxidermy website - Boulder Daily Camera
wtnhunt
Dunno, media sources obviously are not able to be trusted with reporting truth. Seems to be some emotional hype around this with the town folks and some wishy washy information. Those two stories still seems to be a lot of missing, too much for me to make the assumption they are guilty of poaching. As to why the two men did not report it, who knows what took place, sounds like they were attempting however to get the meat taken care of. Were they suspended before they got the opportunity to file a report? Possible maybe? Hopefully the investigation gets to the truth and the men are either cleared or are charged if they did in fact engage in anything unlawful. colorado bob
Poachers pure & simple. Hope they get what's coming to them.
The_Kat
I highly doubt an on duty officer is going to poach an Elk. Lets not forget that a bull elk is a wild animal hanging out in a populated area. Perhaps it charged him? I sure wouldn't want a bull elk running around on the loose with my kids playing outside. As for the candle lighters.....someone had to vote Obama back in office.
stevebeilgard
just a few weeks ago, we heard story after story about the school shootings. after the investigation, though, it was found that almost none, that's none, of the initial information was correct. let's all back off, wait for the investigation, and see what happens. as for now, i'll back the police and assume they did the right thing. if that is proven wrong, and they acted illegally, i'll be the first in line to decry them. COEngineer
stevebeilgard, I hear what you are saying. I just don't see any hint of reasonable doubt. I hold cops to a higher standard, and I wouldn't let this slide for anyone. The other problem is that these stories tend to drift off into oblivion. It will be weeks or months before the investigations are complete, and then months or years before they go to trial, and then if the media even reports on it, it will get a short column on page 14 that will never see the light of day.
