LETMGROW
I applaud their decision. Especially when they state they are going to see to it the folks carrying are going to be properly trained to do so. This to me is very necessary and important. While I do favor guns in schools I don't advocate just anyone having them. An untrained teacher would be dangerous IMO. For someone to be effective they would have to be a certain person with a mind set for the responsibility of carrying out the task. Shooting someone is not something just anybody could do. Death is final. The hesitation someone might have at the moment of truth could lead to a bad outcome. There are instances where well trained police officers have not performed as planned when the real need has arisen. I wonder too how the school can overstep federal gun free school grounds laws to do this. Lynn
wtnhunt
Some states do not have "gun free school" campuses, could be wrong but think Oklahoma is one that does not. Heard on the radio earlier this week that Ohio as a state was now implementing a program offering teachers the class for cc permits. Tennessee is supposed to be discussing doing the same, and from all I have heard those who would be carrying would be carrying concealed and unknown to anyone other than those in the administration and to law enforcement. Agree on training completely, anyone carrying needs to be well trained on situations.

COEngineer
Here is the relevant text of the federal law: (A) It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm that has moved in or that otherwise affects interstate or foreign commerce at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone. (B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm— (i) on private property not part of school grounds; (ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license; Here's a link to the whole thing: Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
COEngineer
So, basically, any State can make it legal to carry on school properties. BTW, if you read the wiki article, I think this law would get struck down if it ever made it to the Supreme Court (at least the current Supreme Court). wtnhunt
It is a federal law Lynn. The law does exempt ccw permit holders. From what I have read and heard individual states evidently do have some input into setting their restrictions and into what is allowed under the federal law though. redkneck
I'm still not sure I'm on board with the idea. It's still the state government over this, the same folks that make so many other fine decisions. I'm not against the idea but world really like to see how the process would be overseen beforehand. wtnhunt
No firearms on school property in Oklahoma. Guess oldtimers strikes again. lol. Pretty sure I read somewhere in the last 4 or 5 years that students were allowed to have cased firearms in their vehicles or in their trunks in school parking lots, which would have been on school property. May have been longer back than that. Thought that was in Oklahoma, but guess not.
redkneck
When I was in school we all had guns in deer season in the truck, many in racks in the back window. Everyone had pocket knives and wasn't uncommon for a teacher to ask you to borrow a knife. Shame where society is today. :'(
LETMGROW
In NY State it IS NOT LEGAL TO POSESS A GUN ON SCHOOL PROPERTY! Regardless of whether you have a CCP. This came from a friend of mine who teaches classes in CCP which is mandatory here before you can obtain a CCP. I would suggest anyone concerened about this should check with a local authority who is knowledgeable of the law and not trust anyone else.
