bowhunter97
What is a good inexpensive protein product that helps deer grow bigger racks?
msman825
inexpensive is a big word cause what ever product you choose to use, your gonna need to keep it poured too them. I feed them here 365 a year, and 40-50 pounds a night ant cheap.
Ravin R10 man
Good 'ol Purina beef mineral 2 to 1 like mentioned above you need to put it out everyday on corn and in a trough feeder thats what I do or make a mix with it ion and Ihave a recipe for that too..pm me if interested..but I can tell you it is not cheap but it will put on 10 inches of bone over last years rack! You dont want to wait until spring...build up their body reserves now with minerals...when they start eating high protein feed come spring....the body will not rob it and you will have much better antler growth..we have seen 12" spikes on yearlings here Edited January 21, 2013 by Mathews XT Man
Rhino
Alyce clover summer food plots. High in protein and less expensive in the long haul. Great food source to hunt too and it will be there until the 1st frost hits it.
bowhunter97
I picked up some evolved harvest throw and gro extreme and everything in it besides the radishes are high in protein so i figured i could plant some of it for the spring when their racks are growing and it will help out their racks grow a bit. And it will cover 1/4 of an acre and im only sittin in a spot that is like 1/3 of an acre so it oughta work.
hoosierhunter
Rack builder Nothing you put out from a mineral lick in the Midwest will have a noticeable difference on your deer. We already have all the minerals and food available so they are not malnourished. If your in the south or Texas then it can make a difference but again it's only one piece of the puzzle. Ravin R10 man
Nothing you put out from a mineral lick in the Midwest. I agree if you think a "lick" will do much..thats why I force feed it on corn..unbeleivable results!
bowhunter97
I live in the south east of the US n south west of FL. They eat corn like there is no tomorrow but it so expensive that i figured only a few buck more for this and if could feed em just as long and help with the racks. Dunno about your deer, but deer here do not seem to care so much for brassicas and bulb mixes. I gave it one last try this year with eh rack radish, no luck with deer hitting it at all. Probably does not get cold enough there for you to get good hard frosts on the greens for the deer eat them. Would go with a clover for a food plot, good protein and could be a year round plot in Florida. For minerals, might consider trophy rocks or a mix that has dical. The knock off trophy rocks from biologic are not the same as the the trophy rock branded rocks though and would not waste money on them. dbHunterNY
mineral licks with all the right stuff like trophy rock put out now until August is important. you don't have the most mineral rich soil down there. otherwise clovers and soybeans are good especially down there where you might not get too hard of a frost. jwasted
Have any of you tried rice bran? I have had good luck with it mixed with corn.
